I think Im posessed (computer q+a)

Ok the latest dilema. My computer has started to just shut down all by its lonesome. Ill be typing a response and boom its off. The green "on" light goes yellow and it will not shut off or restart by hitting the power button. The only way to get it goin again is to unplug it and start over again. Come to thing of it, the NEW TV we just bought did a similar thing last week. It just went snow and it would not turn off or on really, had to unplug it to get it goin again.

Download spybot or another ad ware program and see what you have on there. You are probably all loaded up with spy garbage. I used adaware and it took a lot off, but changed to XoftSpy and it took 37 files off my computer that were screwing it up. A virus program will not do all you need today.

Sounds like you have a power issue of some type, especially if your TV is acting funny as well. You can get a decent battery backup (UPS) for the PC and it won't cost much. The nice thing about some of the brands (like APC) is it comes with software to monitor the voltage going into the system. Logs it as well.

I've seen bad power do funny things and strange things to computers. As we sometimes have surges and outages and have learned from bad experiences I now have a good quality surge suppressor (300 volt max) , then an industrial power regulator, then a Belkin UPS and then my computer. Overkill? Maybe, but no more worries.

"Dirty" power can cause all kinds of nasty problems. They are correct, a UPS can make a tremendous improvment. I have had winXP pro (what I use) do that periodically. I have found out that I have a defective power button on my pc, the button is not releasing comletely, it is getting caught by the case. If the wind blows funky, then there goes the computer.

Im gonna ask my other half what there is for surge protection, I know theres something in the cabinet. Also we have Symantic and some other virus protection. Our power source has at times been unreliable also. Have to check into more protection for us.

The virus software will not protect you from what is called spy ware the addons that gobble up your memory and make the computer reboot all the time, among other problems. Most of the time you never know it is there except for some of the real agressive stuff.

From the sound of your problem it is a power problems or the power settings in the control panels not being compatable with the hardware you have.

Try downloading this:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Then run ALL of the windows "critical updates"

Also, download AdAware or similar spyware removal tool (make sure you update it at well), and then run a scan on your system...

Strange enough this am at work the boss man tells me, " man Im po`ed, I smoked 2 TVs this weekend". He had a similar happening with his TVs as we did but his computer and TV are plugged into the same surge protector and his comp is OK. Im really starting to think its a power issue. A few weeks ago we had 3 times in 2 days most of our VFDs go into "overcurrent" and kick out. This is over a 30 mile spread however and didnt think the problems were this widespread.
Starting to sound like some of the stuff I read in the "peak oil" story

Those little power strips are NOT decent surge protectors. I've seen lightning strikes go right through them. A good UPS can help protect against surges and brown outs, as well as lighning strikes. (APC guarantees up to 10,000 bucks on theirs)

If you have a Volt meter, i suggest usin it to see what voltage you are getting out of your wall. Take a reading every hour or so and write it down. If you get a lot of voltage fluctuation then you know you have dirty power. I also suggest you get a decent UPS.

On my ham bench, I have it fed with 220 and I have two 110 voltmeters hooked up permenantly. You get to see the voltage and how it stays. Mine is two volts different between each side.
