I need a Lincoln mechanic!!!

Which one of our fantastic members can tell me the layout of the cylinders in a 4.6 liter Lincoln engine? Looking down into the engine, what is the physical layout of the cylinders? In other words, which coil is number 1, 4, 7 etc.

Hey, that's a cool site - - never heard of it before, but I notice you must be a member to get information. The TC is a 2001. I put the computer on it and it shows problems with #5. First step of course is change out the coil and plug and see if that helps. Got the coil, suddenly realized I don't know the layout of this engine. DUH

If you could find that out you would be one good man - - of course Lincoln will not tell you. Now why am I not surprised?

Hey, good man. Thanks loads. Hopefully this will get this back up and perking. Appreciate it. Supposed to be a good tough engine.

These 4.6 engines are known for shorting out plug wires where they turn down from the valve cover, to snap on the spark plug. BIG MIKE

OK OK, boy am I glad I am slow. At least I didn't BOMB the wrong cylinder.

So, 1 on passenger side, 5 on drivers side. Correct? Tomorrow.

Mike - - this thing doesn't really have spark plug wires as such - - unless you mean that little tiny short thing coming out of the coil - - I guess I have been in lala land - - I was not aware these things have eight coils. Weird. And, they tell me the coils are messing up quite often. Wonder how hard to convert it over to dual Mallory coils, Magspark ignition, dual point distributor? Now, them were the days - - yeh. Plugs, points and condenser and off you go - - - now wait a minute, if my feeble memory serves me right, you went for about 10 to 20,000 miles and had to do it again. Oh well, I'll keep what I have.

Thanks again, guys.

Have you washed your engine lately at the car wash? The 4.6 is notorious for the plug boots (the rubber part that actually goes into the valve cover) burning through and arcing to the head instead of the spark plug. If any moisture gets in between the head and the boot it'll arc through the rubber and you'll have a miss. Is it SOHC or DOHC 4.6? The SOHC's are worse about this due to the plug boots being vertical and water running directly down the holes....
