Talking For the Geeks

Been thinking about toying with Linux and keep hearing about all those horror stories? Think no more.

I've been playing around with a few different distros, and I think I've found my eventual WinXP replacement. It's VectorLinux ( http://www.vectorlinux.com ) and on my poor ol' PIII 450, this package rocks. Installation was painless (caution, you do have to know a bit about partitioning and pay attention to the screens!), system is rock solid and it screams on this old PC.

If you've been toying with the idea of playing with it, I highly recommend it. And the price is right. Free.

I partitioned my 80 gig hard drive for the installation and created a dual boot system.

C 10 Gig WinXP

D 40 Gig to NTFS
39 Gig to Linux
.7 Gig to the Linux Swap

Wonder how it would run on that old P150 I have down in the basement?

The Athlon 600 already has BeOS on it, can't use that one...

I just DL'd RedHat Fedora and it was a painless install. Looks pretty slick and it will even interface with my Microsoft Server and Windows XP. It has Firefox browser, Evolution for email and Open Office. I dl'd it for free from a RedHat mirror.

7gb for swap? What a waste. If you're going to make a server, or anything you want reliable, there is only once choice: FreeBSD. Even if you don't run any services on Linux, you're still capable of being rooted, as with any *NIX platform, but most distro's aren't security-minded.

Running Gentoo with the selinux policies... on my servers. And on my workstations it's Gentoo.
Painless install. (If you like building and compiling on your own) Very slim systems.
