I hear a train a comin'...

The other day I heard a guy blow his horn and it sounded just like a freight train! It about made me jump out of my pants! He was in a pickup so I know it was aftermarket. Has anyone heard of one of these? I'd like to get one. I don't know if it was air or electric. Thanks!

E-bay has tons of train horn kits, horns, compressor, airtank and hardware. Usually pretty reasonable.

I will agree that many of the after-market horns sound exactly like a locomotive; but, they are no where near the size of the real thing.

When I worked for ****-Southern Railway, I serviced locomotives, and the real train horns would pop a brake button in a second.

Those puny little electric compressors wouldn't get a squeek out of one.

Note the size of the rear facing horns in that gray Ford in the picture above.

Yeah, but aren't the air compressors in a locomotive bigger than the engines in our trucks too? They have a lot of air to blow a horn.

Several of the train horn installs I've seen use a nitrogen bottle and regulator mounted in the bed. I've also seen them done with serious on-board air systems. Gotta have 175 psi or so with a good sized tank to make 'em sound decent.
