Here lots of places have been laying people off. An outfit called roundtop windows is shut down. Another place that makes components for windows and stuff has also slowed down and let quite a few go.

I guess the area is fortunate to have high winds. I wonder how long the windturbine jobs will be around, though. I'd also wonder what happens when you age to the point that 300+ ladder climbs several times a day isn't going to happen.

...and the businesses who laid you off probably aren't eligible for one red cent of stimulus money.. I am sorry you lost your job. I know it's got to be scary during this economy. I wish you the best.

Being self employed I have had to lay me off due to lack of work. I took a part time job at min wage. Not a Pretty picture.

Sad indeed. I have been going through stimulus package stuff, and many businesses like us are not eligible for a dime of it. Government is getting their fair share though, that's for sure!! Not only that, but most likely our taxes are going to be higher for 2009. Two years ago, DTR was in a position to start creating up to 20 FULL-TIME jobs. Now, not one, and we're lucky to be running at this point.... You should see the graphs. It's amazing to see revenue from nearly every industry drop at nearly the same rates during the exact same time period. Thanks Obama!! I want some more Kool-Aid!

I know it's got to be scary during this economy.
I'd say terrifying would be a better word.

I'm pretty well burned out in my current career, and have done some browsing... Not much out there, especially if you want something that pays enough to live on and has medical insurance.

yeah it definately sucks, the marina that laid me off it was the first time in the 30 years that they had to lay off, they actually shut down since just before x mas to a few weeks ago they called a few people back just to prevent losing the buildings and company as a whole. im sorry for everyone else who has also been laid off, im hoping that the 3rd time will be a charm. i just hope something comes up sooner then later becuase i have my school loans i have to pay as well as others just like some of you with your truck payments and morgages ect.... good luck to everyone else and keep your figers crossed that this will all "change" soon

Sorry to hear that welcome to the club again.
I just became a member on Friday after almost nine years with the same company.
Good luck

I am a bus mechanic for the mass transit system in St. Louis but due to a lack of funds at the end of the month I'm out of a job myself. Sure thought mass transit would be a safe place to ride this thing out..oh well....as to the stimulus package for mass transit they are absolutely bloody insane.....they gave us money to buy buses, trains and expand the system but no money for operations to keep the buses on the road and safe to ride in or drive.

I wish you guys luck but whatever you do don't even think about trying to be a truck driver . Far too many people think "Well , I can always drive a truck " Then local newspaper and tv stations report on local driving schools saying how much money can be made trucking . WRONG ! Trucking schools are taking money from desperate people to get them a useless CDL . All fleets are downsizing . There are tens of thousands of drivers out of work . The only reason any carrier would keep hiring is because their drivers keep quitting because they don't get enough miles to survive . I've read the posts on truckers' forums . Drivers go to orientation then get sent home to wait weeks without pay for an available truck . Many graduates never get hired and their CDL becomes useless unless they want to pay over $1,000 for a refresher course . It doesn't matter how much experience a driver has . If he hasn't driven for over 6 months he needs a refresher course .
If you take company training you are obligated to 1 year employment . If they find a reason to terminate you before the year is up they'll send you a bill for over $3,000 for your training . The more graduates trucking schools turn out the worse the situation gets . Lottery tickets would be a better investment than trucking school . The odds against getting hired get higher all the time .

My position of 17 years was eliminated on 02-06-09. I was given a decent severance package and my own business is still doing Ok although I can't see it doing well all year. I train horses and mules on the side and have always had more work than I can do every year. I don't understand how people are still calling up and wanting critters trained or shod but I have the time to do them now. I'm out there looking and hope to have a couple of interviews next week. The railroad is going to be hiring according to the local news but I don't want a job where i'm gone all the time as I have horses and a ranch to take care of and hay to cut. With all the lay offs going on I'm afraid there won't much need for someone with years of experience in management, supervision, and quality. But I'm looking anyway.
