I’ am surprised how many people still have a Hernia!! Several of my friends who I’ve know for years & years, have one..Even one women !! I had mine repaired just about a year ago, & it was one of the best things I’ve ever done.!! I’ve held off for over 10 stupid years..thinking..yea next year..well next year never came, until I just got sick and tired of the darn thing..lol Inguinal hernia is the more common one I understand..Was in surgery Wednesday and back to work on Friday. Would have gone to work Thursday, but the med’s were still in effect…. Just don’t lift anything over 20 lbs for several weeks was the hard part..It actually was very easy and very little pain...so those of you that put it off…get it fixed !! It’s not that bad at all..you’ll feel much better and human again..lol it’s a piece of cake!! Google the word Herina & read up on it..then fix it !!

I had one when I was 17, im now 20 and it's like I didn't even have one at all. The doc said the chances of it reoccuring again was like 1%.

I got it when I was clearing some land. A nice sized oak log was choped into a pretty big section on top of the hill, I was down at the bottom doing something when the log started rolling downwards. I seen it, jumped on it so it wouldn't roll into the river below. I then thought it would be a good idea to pick this couple hundered pound log up. As soon as I got it lifted up I felt this god awful pain in my stomach. That's when my abdominal lining ripped open and a section of my intestine dropped down below(you know where) lol. It was about the size of a golfball.

I guess they use this patch solution now. They put some kind of a patch on the abdominal wall and it disolves with time. You never know its's there.

You must be pretty tough Road, I was in no shape to return to work 2 days later. I was out for a good week.

Well I wasn't as tuff as you Road but I put up with mine for almost a year. Should have listened to the wife and got it fixed right away!!!

Bad thing with the mesh procedure they do nowadays (but alot better outcome than old way) if you are predisposed to hernia's (like me)when you get one side done well guess what, yep you get to visit your doctor again!! lol But once you are done with the second one you are pretty much done with that ever happening to you again.

I've heard the term "double hernia", what exactly is that? 2 in one place?

I think I have an Inguinal hernia. I work in a machine shop and I get a pain in my lower abdomen all the way down to my jewels depending on how much I lift on a certain day. Seems like the pain clears up when I don't lift anything heavy for a day or two. I've been to the doctor once for it already and he didn't diagnose anything so far. Seems like I have the exact same symptoms for an Inguinal hernia.

Wink 'snap! just let me get the gloves on here....

....alright. turn your head and cough. .....j/k

husband did leave it for years. did have the mesh surgery. did not take it easy. had more pain. ignored it. now a year and a half later- he has scar tissue that is painful and varicous lanthrides (veins) yup, no surgery for that but maybe ultra sound to reduce the scar tissue and medication.

guys PLEASE, don't shift your body parts early. lift with legs (do not push hips forward to move a heavy item) and yes, sometimes get a friend to help.

beer seems to go down smoother when you are not gasping for air.

I had mine fixed almost exactly one year ago, belly button hernia, learned two things, percasets (SP0 don't work woth a dam, and man whatever they put in you iv to knock you out works fast ! they cut me under my belly button, bout 4 inches long, and slid in the screen, lot better now, not worrying about havin a blowout anymore. I hear the worst thing about the other hernia location is when stuff starts growing back after gettin shaved for surgerry, man that just sounds itchy as could be !

..one on each "Side" of...well you know..ahemm..

go to a search engine like Google here:

http://www.google.com/advanced_search?hl=en

and enter the words "double hernia" then you can read for days..maybe even learn how to fix it yourself..lol..NOT!!
On many hospitals (like mine) surgery was around 7:00 am and I left the hospital..I think it was around noon? a little after....but my injury/tear was very large the dr said..it just gets bigger if you dont fix it...

Well kxhonda you my freind you probably have one, did you bring it up when you visited the doc? Got to bring it up and tell them what is the problem.

Nate well a double is when you have two different types of hernia's at once like a hiatel and a groinal. One is next to the fun stick, the other is beside the bean bags. Do a search and you can find alot of information on this. I did and found a doc that did the otheroscopic procedure got three little scars none of them more that 1/2". When I got the second one done they used the same place as the first so I wouldn't get more scars.

A lot of how fast you recover after surgery depends on which surgical procedure they use. If they make a several inch long incision, you'll be recovering for a lot longer than if they can do it laproscopically.

I had mine done laproscopically and was crawling back under the truck 4 days later. Not pain-free, mind you, but able to get up and down and under. I put up with mine for several years before it got so uncomfortable that even walking was unpleasant and then I broke down and had it fixed with the mesh. Either 2 or 3 very small scars (I don't remember and can only see 2) and less than a week to being back to good as new.

Do your research and get a good Dr. I decided to pay extra out of my own pocket and go out of (insurance) network to get the Dr. that I wanted and I have no regrets with that decision.

I had the several inch incision done when I had my hernia surgery. I don't even think I was offered the laproscopically option then. But when I had my shoulder surgery(I tore the muscle that held the bone in the socket so my arm would dislocate when it felt like it, several times in a month)

They did the laproscopy thing and they also sliced from the top of my shoulder down into my arm pit. That was the worst thing i've ever dealt with. My arm was in a sling for a month or so and it was darn near impossible to wash my arm pit. That smell would of made a yeti run for the hills.

That's why I went out of network and chose the Dr. that I chose. In network didn't offer laproscopic back when then. I was willing to pay more for less discomfort.

My surgery was taken care of through Tri-Care. The militarys insurance. They covered 80 and I had to pay 20. Being as I wasn't in the services, I was just the dependent of one.

The real bad part for me was the physcial therapy. I had one mean phsycial therapist. She reminded me of the Predator. She was twisting and bending me like I was silly puddy.

I go in this Friday to get my umbilical hernia removed. Had it for about 5 years and will be glad when its gone. I hope to be able to lift and not be in pain continuously and not worry about getting hit in the stomach.
