Holy Billowing White Smoke Batman !

That's what was coming out of my truck this morning.

Long story short:

Christmas lights got too wet last night and tripped the GFI outlet in the garage.
Whole garage runs through this GFI (lights, openers, outlets)
I got home, unplugged the lights and reset the GFI.
Forgot, however to reset the timer my truck plugs into at night.

18 degrees when I fired it up.
Noticed the wait to start stayed on a little longer than usual, but as my truck was plugged in to the extension cord, I just figured it was very cold.

Truck started right up, but thick billowy white smoke was just pouring out of the tailpipe.
I smelled it, just to make sure it wasn't oil

This continued for about 3 minutes, good thing the house next door is vacant, or they would have got a snoot full.

Thought to myself, this hasn't happened when the truck has been plugged in, hmmmmmmm.

Checked the timer and it was running 6 hours behind.

I wish I would have thought to grab the camera and take a picture.
Not something you see everyday.

Oh, and this also confirmed that yet again that my cold weather idle wasn't enabled correctly the last time I tried.
Idle stayed right at 800 ish for the 6 minutes it took to scrape the windows and get the kids suited up for school.

Guess I have to get medieval on the Dealer Service guy next oil change. >

Re:Holy Billowing White Smoke Batman !

i see white smoke all the time from a cold burn, not incorrect timing. it only happens for a minute or so until the egts pull up to around 250-300. this always happens below 20*. with the marine pump, it smokes no matter what--black, hazy white, maybe blue...depends......but that's for different reasons.

mine smokes black at idle sometimes and will make smoke rings 'cause the idle will get very jumpy when cold and the grid heaters cycling.

This happens quite frequently, I start my truck and go inside to finish getting ready for the day. When I come back out I cant hardley breathe. The neighbors may not like it, But I love the smell of diesel in the morning.

Re:Holy Billowing White Smoke Batman !

Yup, it's normal.

Just not normal for my truck to do it, since I supposedly have it plugged in every night.

I've only seen it one other time, and thats when I left it unplugged on purpose, to see if the cold weather idle was working, but it wasn't near the amount it was yesterday morning.

Now I check the timer when I plug it in, to make sure it is working properly.
I also found the string of lights that was soaking wet and shorting to ground, so it shouldn't happen again.

All better now.
