Holy gear grinding Batman

I jumped in my 94 today and took off down the road. I did not have the windows down at first but as I got into 5th gear I rolled them down. I saw two kids playing with a football up ahead so I down shifted to 4th and then to 3rd as the ball rolled across the road. I lightly put my foot back on the GO pedal and it acted like normal. I pushed the pedal a little harder because I was in a rush and I heard a grinding sound. It sounded like if you were trying to put the truck in 4x4 low when still moveing : (don't ask). This happens every time I try to push the truck a little. NOT trying to use all 350hp. Just giveing her normal fuel.
I guess this is going to be a $$$$ thing. Has anyone had this before?
DM01

At the risk of sounding to simplistic, it sounds like something is deflecting under load in your tranny, if so, it could be a bearing. I suppose it's possible that there is too much endplay somewhere in there, causing gears to clash. Are there no other symptoms?

Took her out for a spin again today and shifted it into 4wd and it went away. I beat the out of it in 4wd and it never made the sound. Shifted it back to 2wd and it came back as soon as I did it. Does that shed any light on the subject or just cloud it up?
DM01

Check the transfer case. That is the variable.

Re:Holy gear grinding Batman

Sounds like you broke the snap ring in the tail housing of the transfer case. It makes a grinding sound in 2wd, but doesn't make a noise in 4wd. It is easy to check/fix. Drop the rear driveshaft and take the rear-most piece of the tailhousing off. There will probably be a couple of pieces laying in the bottom. Good Luck, Brian
