Re:Have You Seen This? Buying Canadian Truck

Of course, long time ago I owned a Canadian vehicle....nice rig but had to get rid of it.

Every time I stepped on the brake pedal, it made a funny sound.

Sounded like "eh" ;D

Re:Have You Seen This? Buying Canadian Truck

Its buyer beware.

I would send all my trucks south after running on a lease for 2 of the three yrs and always came out with 3-5K profit with a 100% write off of the pmt for my bizz. That was until they put the new rules in place and the Canadian dollar got stronger.

This white truck is an 01' 3500 4x4 HO SLT + Sport with all the options and I bought it for 42,800.00 CAD new on a factory order. At that time if you subtracted 54% you would get the American dollar price. Its a bit different now.
I claimed my GST back on all that were shipped. Thats the 7% goods and service tax. Theres ways of getting the provincial tax back too.

Now that plan is up in smoke with the 04' Ram. No big deal, I sold my 01 to the dealer for a slightly smaller profit then I would have if I shipped it south. I even get to drive it til the new one arrives for a rental fee of less then half of the original payment.

I know that Dodge dealers were showing up in the hundreds at auctions up here and at the border cities in the USA to get the deals and resell them.

It was a good thing for them too. It was surprising to see how they were actually buying these trucks for less then the cost from DC.

I'd like to see the sticker for a 70K Ram up here. My new truck is a loaded up Laramie and its not near that and its under 60K MSRP. That does not sound right. Maybe its a typo.

I can see some dealers taking a crunch for the competition down the street...DC took a while to stifle that. Other manufacturers have done that for yrs. Sell it south...no warranty.

Its a thing that has come and gone.

Thats both taxes in totaling 15% here in ONTARIO (thanks again) half my pay cheque goes to the government and then 15% of everything I buy does to and look where we are still in debt! Sorry I hate our government! Anyways that was the price of mine done deal ordered the way I wanted its actully cheaper to get 4x4 did you know that? Apprearantly its more common the 2 wheel peels. I got posi and the good stuff I didn't want a split rear window so that was extra you know the usualy oh your buying a new truck bend over please sir!

Jamie, don't mean to rub salt into your wound, but you may be too young to remember this, when the GST was introduced it was supposed to be a temporay thing. It was presented to the public as not being a permanent tax. Just like other taxes were supposed to be temporary. Yeah, right!!!
If you hate your gov't that much (me too) why don't you become a politician and do something to change it for everyone? How about that for a challenge? ;D

You will not find a new or near new Canadian diesel for $42 k.[/quote]

Well, actually my 03 SLT 3500 was sold to me for $42,900. Scottys truck (full load SLT Laramie with quad cab) stickered out at $49K Cdn. We don't get the incentives up here, as the prices are already considerably lower than the US market. Our dealers also don't get the same level of kickback that US dealers do, so its tough to get anything for much less than invoice +$500 (not impossible though).

BTW, for anyone in the US buying a Cdn vehicle, keep in mind that you get the fed and provincial sales tax refunded in full. You do need to contact Canada Customs and Revenue as well as the provincial revenue agency and request the proper forms to be filled out.

My '04 2500 QC 4x4 Laramie, Cummins, 48re, Sport appearance, Anti slip, Trailer tow (pkg & mirrirs), on/off road tires, heated seats, listed for $55,055CDN. Cost is $$49,440 less a $1,750CDN Fleet Allowance, for a pre tax total of $47,650. $500.00CDN of the $700CDN holdback goes to the dealer for "profit". He can keep whatever kickbacks are available. For $47,000 and change, I think it's a great deal. It's at least a $5,000USD savings at retail compared to the USD prices. As far as shiping it to the USA. After the first 3 years are up and I'm ready to trade, I'll have a 3rd party warranty on it for the powertrain and ship it south. I'm sure I will get excellent value for it (assuming our $ doesn't improve).

If you want a great deal, order a truck from a dealer that sells less than their allocation for a Cummins unit. They are happy to move a truck and it doesn't come from inventory, so they still have it when that guy comes around who has to have a new truck like yesterday (they make piles of money off these guys).

Ive been very frustrated with this in the past - makes it next to impossible to find a decent truck in Canada - decent used trucks are few and far between up here.

I agree. I want to evetually get out of my 96 gasser and get into a late 90's early 2K truck for my service vehicle. All I see are these great trucks on flatdecks heading south. Any that are here they want two arms and a leg for. The blackbook price for a used diesel is usually about $5K lower than the sale price anywhere. The price privately is almost as much cuz they are usually financed to the max. :-

Price aside, it's almost impossible to find a truck that hasnt been trashed....of course, many are x-oil patch.

I was looking for a new truck for used prices. In the end, I ended up paying more than I wanted but found a pretty good truck and didnt pay GST.

I don't know where they're taking them on those flatbeds, but it isn't Missouri, as near as I can tell. It's almost impossible to find a used CTD around here.
