Re:Have You Seen This? Buying Canadian Truck

yep just get yerself a PO box in Canada, pay less for your truck, and get to rack the mileage faster because it is in kilometers. this was introduced to stop people from heading over the border and buying a Canadian truck and taking it south of the border. Go to the Dodge.ca website, build a truck, convert the US dollar to Canadian peso, and see what you can save. If you have a friend or relative in Canada get the licence and insurance stuff sent to them. If you need work in the USA, say you are "visiting"... IE 42g truck Can equals 28 and change US. And a 42g Can truck is loaded, diesel etc. FWIW. Or someone told me ;D :-X

Re:Have You Seen This? Buying Canadian Truck

Spot
The Canadian deal is not quite as good as it looks. I paid 48000 Canadian for mine ( and I got a good deal) on top of that there is a Federal tax of 7%. When I bought mine the Canadian Dollar was only worth 65 cents so I paid $51360.00 times .65 equals $33384.00USD.In Alberta we are the only province that does not have a sales tax,so I don't know what you would pay in Ontario or British Columbia etc. Also I had to sign a paper that I would not sell this unit outside of Canada for at least Six months. Apparently there was a problem with people selling low milage ( under 30,000 kms or 18600 miles) big three diesel pickups into the US. A lot of these trucks apparently had the Canadian speedometers replaced and the daytime running lights removed etc. to Americanise them and they were sold as new or nearly new American pickups. So to make a long story short your government and ours are cracking down on this. Also I notice that we in Canada do not get all the incentive programs that you do in the States.
Today our dollar is worth about 68 and a half cents or so.
Jim O

When the new Chebby Duramax's came out in B.C.... you couldn't buy one outright for the first three months, you could only lease one. This was to stop people from getting one and reselling it over the border. I heard they did the same thing with the new Ford thunderbird too.

The retail on mine was almost $70,000.00, with the taxes. Hard to wheel and deal too much when you order one from the factory the way you want it. There were none around with the options that I wanted.

jt

Re:Have You Seen This? Buying Canadian Truck

I am a Canadian but now living in Mexico. Did not purchase a Canadian truck because I found that the warranty was not that good and would not work in Mexico. So bought a truck built for the US market and now have a warranty that will work in three countries.
If anybody has a Canadian truck with the metric panel and would like to switch with my imperial panel, call me.
Alternatively, would you Canadians please watch for a wrecked '03 2500 with the metric panel so that I can purchase the panel.

Re:Have You Seen This? Buying Canadian Truck

You will not find a new or near new Canadian diesel for $42 k. I bought mine slightly used with about 20 k miles.

My truck is a 2001 2500 SLT+. I have the invoice from the original owner and the truck was $ 55k (including tax).

Re:Have You Seen This? Buying Canadian Truck

This was also done to help combat the number of "gray market" vehicles that were being brought into the U.S. An American independent dealer would go to Canada, buy a dozen new vehicles and have an importer bring them back into the U.S. They would sell them for a fraction of what the Dodge dealer down the street was selling them for and undercut the dealer. They would claim, since they had 20 or 30 miles on them that they were used and that you had the balance of the factory warranty. To help the US dealers, DC implemented the policy concerning the warranty. Now those same dealers that are selling them are offering an aftermarket warranty on those vehicles that aren't even accepted at the Dodge dealership!!

I looked at the vehicles at Lybargers in Anchorage, AK, and they were selling new Ram CTD's but they had the Canook maple leaf on the door pillar and and importer's sticker confirmed they had been imported and the speedometer/odometer changed from kilometers to miles. All of them had between 30 and 200 miles on them, were new inside and out, and were about $9000 less than the dealer. But, they didn't have a DC warranty. The salesman and manager told me they had aftermarket warranties for 3/36. When I asked them if the 5/100 Cummins warranty was still in effect for the "gray market" vehicles, they said they didn't know but that I could use their phone to call the local Cummins shop. I didn't even bother going any further at that point as I couldn't see saving money and then have the aggrevation of dealing with an aftermarket warranty. Add that to the negative attitude the Dodge dealers have towards outfits like this and it's a non-starter for me.

Now, with all that said, the Dodge dealers aren't perfect but at least their vehicles are backed by the full warranty of DC.

Re:Have You Seen This? Buying Canadian Truck

It doesnt really matter where you bought your truck - as far as I know, the warranty is NOT handled by Cummins. They will not do any warranty on any of the Dodge pickups. The warranty is through DC. Sure some dealers send trucks to Cummins to be worked on, but the dealer is paying for it and it would be because of a technical repair or just that the DC mechanics dont deal too much with diesels. Cummins will gladly work on your truck if you're willing to fork over the $93 and hour service rate (at least thats what is is where I live).

Re:Have You Seen This? Buying Canadian Truck

I just called Cummins Northwest and they did confirm your remark that all warranty is handled through DC. He said that Dodge purchases the engines from Cummins without a warranty and that DC warrants the vehicles. The Cummins 5/100 warranty is a Dodge warranty and NOT a Cummins warranty.

One more reason not to purchase a gray market vehicle since DC will not honor the warranty on any part of the vehicle. Can't understand why someone would purchase a "new" $30,000 gray market vehicle just to save money and not have the full warranty standing behind it.
