Grade 8 Bolt / Thread Die ???
I need to cut extra threads on the unthreaded shank of two coarse 7/16 grade-8 bolts.
Reason being, I am making two long studs to hold the axle-flange, then also hold the bracket for the Veederoot Hubometer.
If the Grade-8 is too hard for my normal thread die, what if I make these two studs from regular grade bolts, seeing as how the other six bolts/studs are the good stuff ??
Thanks.

it would be better to visit you local bolt and screw shop and get a piece of B7 All thread and a couple 2H nuts.
the threads are rolled (faster to manufacture) and the unthreaded shaft is smaller than the major diameter of the threads.

My local bolt and screw shop consists of two bolt-bins, right next to the circular nail carousel, Grade-8s and regulars, and not a lot of either.
I have searched all of the regularly recommended sites that advertise studs and nothing they offer is what I need; so.........., I figured I would make them up myself.
What is "B7" all-thread and "2H nuts" ??
Thanks.

the b7 is the best way to go but a non china die will cut the threads ok and as stated the threads will not seat as deed in the nut where cut on the shank

B7 and 2H are the ASME specs for studs and nuts that are equivilant to Grade 8 in bolts and screws.

you go into any screw shop and ask for a grade 8 stud, you will get a B7 (stamped on the end), but they will usually know what your talking about.
Grade is for bolts and screws so most people refer to all threaded hardware that way. I was guilty of that too until I started dealing with pressure vessels and bolted flange connections and learned the error of my ways.
