Good article on Old Dogs

we need a Dog sub forum!!

dog article

Old dogs can be cloudy-eyed and grouchy, gray of muzzle, graceless of gait, odd of habit, hard of hearing, pimply, wheezy, lazy, and lumpy. But to anyone who has ever known an old dog, these flaws are of little consequence. Old dogs are vulnerable. They show exorbitant gratitude and limitless trust. They are without artifice. They are funny in new and unexpected ways. But, above all, they seem at peace.

our dog is about 9, she is winding down, and you can see she feels it in her bones.

it makes me heart sore to see her ache when she moves around.

I know what you mean. My female Mastiff is about 10yrs and barely gets around. Sometimes I have to watch her for a second or two just to make sure she's still kickin and dread the day I have to rent a backhoe to dig a grave.

I've started giving her 2 Bufferins a day it seems to help with her arthritis.

Ask your vet about Previcox for the arthritis. I started it for one of my last dogs who was 14 years old. She had other issues that finally took life but the Previcox made her into a new dog for a while!!

lousy subject!
I am in total denial!! Have two...10 & 11 yrs,
Both have slowed considerably and are breathing a bit harder. But both are more affectionate..... more quietly playful and more eager to please.
I refuse, as yet, to even consider the day they are gone.
But I do read this (on my wall) about once a week.
It's been around a while but worth sharing with those new to puppies, or those that just haven't read it for a while!!

A PET'S TEN COMMANDMENTS
1. Give me time…. To understand what you want.
2. Love me….. It is crucial to my well-being.
3. My life will only last 10-15 yrs; any long separation from you is painful.
4. Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment, but I have only you.
5. Talk to me. Even if I don’t understand your words, I like hearing them
6. Be aware of how you treat me, I will never forget it
7. Before you hit me or get very angry, remember that I could easily hurt you .... but never will.
8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me.... not getting the right food, in the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old or weak.
9. Please take care of me when I grow old. You too, will grow old.
10. On my ultimate difficult journey, please go with me. Never say you can't bear to watch. Don't make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there.

Take a moment today to thank God for your pets. We do not have to wait for Heaven, to be surrounded by hope, love, and joyfulness. It is here on earth and has four legs!

My sentiments exactly. Kailey is 9 too. Now you're gonna get me browsing the Flatcoat Retiever Rescue pages tonight.... as she gets older, I don't like her being alone so long while at work.

I was thinking the same.

Good post! I also like the 10 commandments for a dog. My parents have a 10 yr old Rottie that was just diagnosed with bone cancer. I know when he goes they'll be heart broken, the wife, I, my sis, and brother will all be upset too. He's one of those dogs that everyone wishes they had because of his character, a big teddy bear. That old dog they have is a very loyal and kind one, one that could never be replaced.

Thumbs up Dogs

Go to your Vet and have them give you Deramaxx, your dogs will be running like when they were a puppy!

Small doses of Ibuprofin did wonders for my folk's healer. She almost made it to 15.

Also, a lot of dogs develope skin allergies with age. Small doses of antihistamine can help that too. Stops a lot of itching and helps with any sores.
