Glad I don't live in Indonesia

They had a 7.6 magnitude earthquake earlier today and just had another 7.5. Not to mention several other 5.0+ aftershocks. You can see the USGS website showing them here. Luckily no tsunami reports as of yet.

On my trips to Batam and Brunei, I never really worried about earthquakes. the biggest buildings are the hotels, most of the buildings are mostly wooden and maybe two stories. Some of the shops are just tin lean-tos...

One of the hotels in Thailand that was shown in the tsunami's from the big quake was in Kamala Beach. That was the one that I stayed in when we were there. When I was there and diving on the coral reefs I didn't think about earthquakes either. Just like I don't think about them here in Cali. But when the happen, it's a wake up call. They've had 9 aftershocks measuring over 5.0 and another 4 that were 4.7-4.9. I had a 5.2 that the epicenter was basically under my bedroom that I didn't like. And have felt several other large quakes around Cali that woke me up (Northridge and the Hector Mine quake that was in the northwest corner of 29 Palms). The USGS site has some interesting pictures of the Hector Mine quake. One shows vehicle tracks across the desert (presumably 5-tons as we didn't have the 7 tons at the time). One shot you can see the tracks going up to the fault line and on the other side the tracks are way off to the right. A shift of roughly 14 feet. That's a lot of energy released. Here is the link to that picture. There were something like 1200 aftershocks from that one. Mostly small ones but a few in the 5.0 range. And we all thought that Lois Lane's car getting swallowed up by an earthquake was unbelievable.

Speaking of earthquakes. We just had one here. Waiting on the USGS site to update and see where it was. Wait a minute, it was a 4.9 in San Bernardino. Not too bad here.

Edit: make that a 5.0

I'm about 15 miles from the EQ in Berdoo; my 4-yr old came running into the room with wide eyes- "what are you doing in here?" That was an earthquake, Scoots. "Well, knock it off, I'm building a Lego boat!"

I don't think he really gets it.

Now that was funny. Luckily I wasn't taking a drink of my beer or I might have needed a new keyboard.

I see that they've downgraded it to a 4.5. Not much in SoCal standards.
