Fluid Change/Total Flush in older Trans??
I have a buddy with a 3500 SRW 1988 Chevy 1 Ton that has a 3 spd auto Tranny!! Here is my question-------- The Tranny oil is burnt (Brown, bad smell, probably never been fully serviced)---bought the Truck with 200k+! He is looking into getting the Tranny Fully Flushed and serviced but some think that he should just drop the pan, replace the filter, fill up tranny and forget about it because of the age of the Tranny. It does not slip by what he or I can tell.
Will replacing all of the Tranny Fluid cause massive leaks and slippage of the Trans?????? This is our Beach Buggy and it has seen overheating problems with the engine (454)! We are going to be installing an aux-trans cooler along with a new Radiator before she goes back on the beach! Thanks for the Help, JB

I had heard the same stories when I had my Ford F350 with C6 auto tranny. The fluid was burnt, lotsa miles on it, etc..
I dropped the pan, replaced the filter and drained the torque converter and replenished the fluid and never had any issues with it. The flush may have gotten a little more fluid out, but I didn't want to bother with it.
Might be a good idea to flush the power steering system while he's at it - talk about stinky on the ford.
