I-10 all the way. If you drive through the middle of the night you can hit SA and H town when the traffic isn't bad. You could pick up 290 to miss SA but it will still dump you in Houston.

You could try Mapquest and see how 20 to 49 back down to 10 would work out, but I doubt it is shorter.

Yeah man honestly I-10 is the way to go quickly. Just keep on I-10 East and you should be fine.

IH-10 thru SA is 10x easier than IH-35 in SA. Pretty much 5 lanes both ways and even @ 5pm the traffic is easy to manage. I drive it every day and wouldn't waste my time trying to "go around" the city as the outter loops 1604 and 410 can be twice as bad traffic wise.

Yup. When I was in SA last summer I-10 was never a problem. Lots of traffic but it seemed to move real fast all the time. I was in it at all different times of the day too

As stated the fastest and shortest is to stay on I-10. Certainly middle of the night or early Saturday or Sundays are best times. Since the I-10 expansion on the west side of Houston is completed that part of crossing Houston is not bad at all. The problem is now on the east side of Houston I-10 construction. During the day or early evening it can be bad around Baytown.
