Expedition or Suburban?
Expedition or Suburban?
I know, I know, but we need something bigger than Dodge offers. But what do yall recommend? Ford has the nicer interior. But what about reliability between the two?
We traded in the wifes Expedition for her Yukon XL. The Ford did the job and to be honest, my wife liked the way it drove better. I on the other hand like the bigger suburban style vehicle.
I think we got comparable fuel mileage ... wasn't too concerned with it as long as it held everyone comfortably. The Yukon is definately more comfy ... especially with the heated "bun warmers" in the front.
I would recommend the Burb over the Furd

I'd recommend the Ford. The F-150/Expedition platform has been very problem free. Never ever seen so much as a coolant or oil leak from one. Front ends stay tight, etc. On the GMs, leaks seem common, as are upper ball joints, idler/pitman arms, cracked trans. extension housings. I'd definitely take the Ford.

my opinion is do not buy anything with a 5.4 triton in it, other than that i like all suvs, but the triton engines have been nothing but problems for me i had one that i beat on, and it actually lasted longer than my other 2, the other 2 would have severe problems all the time, i ran the one easy and it only went to 98 k, the other one had stupid problems like over heating, cracking pistons...i liked them too, could lay a burn out for a mile with that thing.
the dealer told me that the reason my Triton's didn't last for me is because they should be warmed up to at least 3/4 of the running temperature before driving, and not to go into overdrive until the transmission was at proper running temperature, ever since i listed to that, i haven't have a problem turned me off from them big time though

Looking at the 08's in both. I have drove both. Both ride very well but I think what it boils down too is reliability. I mean if your gonna pay 50K for it, it just as well last. I do like King Ranch edition, but the all black leather isnt bad in either one. I do like the power lift gate and the power rear fold down seats in the Ford. As far as comfort, the Ford wins IMO. Lets hear some more opinions and experience on both. Thanks guys.
Go for a 3/4 'Burb. It comes with an all cast iron 6.0 and I believe it has the new 5 speed auto in it. I test drove an 07 and actually considered trading my 2001 Dodge in for it. To "fancy" for me.
Check the specs. on their website.
I hate the new body style, but its still a 'burb.
Have a good one.

Don't know about the new ones, but I have a 98' Expy with the 5.4L It has 115,000 trouble free miles on it. I've had it since 01' and other than routine maintenance, the only thing I had to put in it was an alternator. Yes the spark plugs can be a PIA, but they can be done in an afternoon and only have to be done every 100,000 miles. We drive it to FL every year. We were looking at a new Lincoln MKX, but since the Expy is paid for, we'll keep it around another couple of years before taking on another big payment.

I had a 98 burb, 5.7, I sold it to my sister with 152k on the clock, she traded it for a Toyota last month with 210k on it. Normal wear and tear and maint is all I, or she ever did to it.
On the other hand I have owned several 5.4 tritons, the only problems I had was with my 99 f250, the mixing valve for the heat is located directly above the #4 cyl, it would leak and drip onto the coil/plug and short it out, easily fixed. Then the all plastic intakes would develope coolant leaks, the changed that out early, and made the coolant crossover aluminum ending the leak problems, all in all a very dependable motor. As far as changing out the plugs, the engine has to be cold, other than that no big deal at all. Its a modular V-8, just like the Chevy, both are cast iron blocks with aluminum heads and plastic intakes. The Chevy comes with a 100k p/t warranty (nice), I don't believe the Ford does.
If you have any thoughts of towing with the new ride then I would definitely go with the Ford, more torque lower in the power band and a stronger transmission. The Chevy's love to rev, 4k rpm to be in there power range
, the Chevy has a higher fuel economy rating though.
I believe either vehicle will serve you well, I personally like the Ford a little better, however a 100k mile p/t warranty is a hard thing to pass up.
Good luck on this one,
Tim

I would go for the Suburban. I had a 1994 and it was one of those "fill it up gas and check the oil", then I got a 1999 and it was always getting something fixed. Now my brother has a 2007 GMC Yukon XL and is happy with it, has had it for year and a half now. Nice looking but sure has a lot of fancy electrical 'stuff' in it. My vote is Suburban ( my vote here has about much weight at home and work I suspect)
