E-Collar experiences

I will be getting a check from a job in a few days, and I am going to use part of it to get a E-Collar for my English Pointer, Diesel. I hunt mostly upland, probabally 15 trips a year, 2-3 duck/goose trips a year.

He is going to be a year old on August 2, I am not planning on using it untill after dove season, he is VERY good on here/no and learning woah. I know how to use one, I am going to use one, but was wanting people's experiences on the collars they have used. I have a buddy that always uses DT collars, and I am leaning to the DT here, the TriTronics is the only other one I am really looking at, unless yall have some other suggestions.

Model 1830- http://www.dtsystems.com/products/H2O1800.aspx

One of the two without the beeper- http://www.tritronics.com/remotetrai...l#SPORTBASICG3

Most folks in our PSA club use 'em. I like the Tritronics a lot better than the Dogtra stuff, personally, as do most of the folks in our group. The Tritronics pieces are heavy enough that they don't mind being dropped on concrete. Only bad thing I've seen is that the 'Basic' model isn't enough to control the most determined dogs. None of us have the 'Combo' model, but I've heard the highest levels on that one are about 30% stronger than the basic. I doubt it would be an issue with a hunting dog, anyway, though. No experience with the DT stuff - looks interesting though.

I figured we had a few more guys that ran dogs on here...

Thanks for the input, I for some reason am now leaning more to the Tritronics. Even before I got home and read your response...

Diesel is actually a really obedient dog, especially for a pointer. I mainly want one for in field reenforcement, what collar are you running?

I've got the basic Tritronics one - bought it used last year. It's always had enough juice for my dogs. Hope that helps.

What are you going to use it for? It's great for snakeproofing and stuff; it's also good for recall proofing once the dog actually knows what "come" means but I can't say that I would use it regularly to train the dog in obedience.

I know some of people use them as a crutch but negative reinforcement like that is bad for training, and their dogs usually show it. I guess knowing what your plans are would be a good start, and then I can try and answer your question from there.

I have a TriTronics Pro 100 G2 and it works well. I also like the fact that it DOES have a beeper because when I'm out in the woods with him, and he's beyond shouting distance on a search, I can "page" him back without having to shock him. The collar for him now is more of a pager than anything since I haven't had to shock him in a good three years or so.

Good luck with your decision..

Jack

I got a pet safe one from my store and I love it my Siberian husky was a complete wacko before would not listen would not come and would not back off of any thing. Mine has 10 levels of correction and also a beeper like jacks and the way i trained my husky was i beep it first then if she did not respond i shocked and now I have her coming too her name and she is a good girl now and she is learning what she can and cant chase. I have her now too the point were i rarely have to use the shock once she hears the beep she acts like she just got the shock of her life . Also what i have done in the past with them on my cattle dogs is they know when that collars on its business or its going to hurt so what i do is take the metal prongs usually a extra set and dip them in that rubber handle coating stuff and just put it on the dog and leave it off and they are well mannered.

I want it for infield reinforcement/trash breaking. I agree that some (many) people overuse them, an it does show in their dogs.

I had been wanting a beeper, but didn't really have the budget for it. But the wife and I decided better to spend a little more and get the one I really want. At the moment I'm thinking it will be the DT H2O series with the beeper.

I wouldn't use one on a young dog or an untrained one, but to polish up offleash work or correct extreme behavior they are very effective. I disagree entirely with the statement that negative reinforcement is bad for training. A good training program needs both positive and negative reinforcement, IMHO.

For the money you can't beat it, plus Lion Country is definitely a stand up organization, they know the products and do good on price,
I myself have a pointer, female though, throw up a picture when you get a chance,

Ekk33 is right on with the Lion Country supply.. good advice and good prices. Also I know Tritronics offers rebuild/upgrade type service on their products. One of my birdhuntin buddies uses them religiuosly and always gets them upgraded every two years. I have used the Tritronics Sport 65 BPRs with the cricket chirp on my Shorthair for the last year and he responds to the chirp instantly for obedience issues and I haven't had to zap him in the field more than a couple of times this past season, mostly because of interfering with other dogs. I am happy with it but it is the only one I have ever used. Kurt

That looks like a great choice! Just don't let Diesel see you with the controller, Wyatt caught me with it and now gets very agreeable when he sees me holding it!

That's part of why I wanted it now, even though I don't plan on using it for a few months. I want him to be arround it and not be collar shy/wise.

I made a false reciever with a block of plastic with two 8d duplex nail heads in it to 'fool' him into thinking he was weaing it all the time. If he disobeys I can hold my cell phone out and when he sees it he comes runnin. I know this goes against traditional training methods but I blew it by messing with the controller in front of him and he's pretty sharp. Surprisingly he's really good in the field, I've had to buzz him more for disciplinary reasons at home than in the field. He forgets he's wearing it hunting but knows its on at home.
