Just got back from the hospital. Medically: no real change. However Andy looks better (more color in his face) and was moving around. Prayer is working! Still waiting for him to wake up. The medical staff seem content to let that happen in its own time. He was going for another MRI of his brain and C-spine when I left. Thank you all very much!

FWIW,

Other's have said that speaking to someone in a coma, or other process where they cannot communicate can have dramatic effects on the person under the veil of silence.

When my mom was passing away, I was told that the very last thing a person can do as they're leaving us is "hear us". This goes the same for those who are in "temporary coma's". Apparently, there have been accounts of those who were in comas who, when they awoke, startled the people around them by dictating, or recanting stories, conversations, and happenings about them, while they were not able to speak. Because the auditory nerves are almost "automatic", if not severed, they still transmit information (words) to the person as they lie there.

So, if I was in a comparable situation as yours, I would do everything possible to have as many people around that person speaking to them in everyday language, telling them what was happening in life around them, hopefully stimulating the brain to recover back to what it was.

My thoughts and hopes go out to your family.....

I got some conflicting reports abt Andy today. Around noon one of my other cousins called and said his MRI results showed severe traumatic brain injury in the form of Diffuse Axon Injury and the med staff said there was little possibility of him waking up. Around 9pm my mom called and told me they were reducing his pain meds, removing the sedatives and the med staff was expecting him to wake up at some point in the near future. I didn't go to see him today because his parents needed time alone with him and asked for privacy.
I'll go see him tomorrow after work. He still needs the prayers and support. Thanks for listening guys.

I've heard/read some things about that. I talked to him a little when I was there last night. He's working on a 1987 Comanche project. Putting a 6" lift on it and repowering it with a Mercedes 5 cylinder diesel engine. I told him if he didn't come back I was going to junk it. Trying to motivate him.
When I go to see him tonight I'm going to read to him from Wanda Hickey's Night of Golden Memories by Jean Shepard (the stories that went into the movie "A Christmas Story"). My dad would read me those stories when I was a kid and I loved them. He would read them to me when I was sick and it made me feel better.
Thanks for you're thoughts...means a lot.

Prayers sent for Andy. Remember, it's not the quality or quantity of the words in the prayer but the belief in the heart of the person speaking them. If the woods and the water are your sanctuary, then approach your alter and send some knee mail. A couple hours of quiet reflection in the woods, listening to your heart and talking to God can make wondrous things happen. Keep the faith!

Folks, words are tough right now so I'll keep it brief. We didn't get the decision we hoped for concerning my Grandson. We're moving forward as best we can from here.

Quick update on my cousin Andy. They took his breathing tube out since he is breathing on his own now. He isn't awake yet but he is responding to most commands (thumbs up, squeeze hand, wiggle toes, etc.). The doctors and, more importantly, the nurses seem optimistic that he will wake up. They tell me that brain injuries take time (usually a long time) to heal.
Andy is more like a brother than a cousin to me. We do a lot of car stuff together. Thanks again for all your thoughts and prayers. As my grandmother used to say "thoughts are prayers".

Well, that's an encouraging sign.

Years ago, there was some sort of PBS documentary where they had a person in a similar situation as your Andy is,and the family tried all kinds of things to get the woman to come around. nothing worked until they brought her little yorkie dog into the hospital room, and laid the dog on her bed, next to her. When her hand touched the dog's fur, the woman opened her eyes, as it jump started her recovery, by somehow stimulating some sort of area in the brain that, I guess, woke her up.

Does Andy have any pets, or other significant something in his life ? Might be worth a shot.
