Hoss, you wont be disappointed with DSL. I have DSL right now and have had cable in the past and really cant tell any difference. You will be very happy with the increased performance over dialup.

Re:DSL or Cable Modem??

Most people dont even know what they are actually at as far as speed!!!! I laughed at the remark about someone saying they get 10mbs on cable although I don't think they were lying just misinformed.

Perform a simple test http://www.toast.net/performance/ run the compression test. Simple enough!

I use DSL for some simple reasons but one very important one to me is that the cable company requires a basic tv cable service too and I love Satelite way too much.

I did opt for a higher level of DSL through Verizon (costs more) but my speed is higher too!

Interesting to hear what people are actually getting for speed.....

Hoss, if you go with DSL, you will need a filter on each telephone jack. My provider, Verizon, supplied 5 filters and 1 wall plate filter. Recently though, I installed a "whole house" filter at my service entrance and connected my DSL modem on a dedicated line upstream to the filter. Also keep in mind if you have satellite TV service, your receiver's telephone modem will need to be filtered too. This was my reason for going with a whole house filter.

Yeah....I was aware of that. Not a big deal for me though. We don't have satellite TV and we only have three phones in the house.

Are you happy with Verizon? That's who I'll have to use if I go the DSL route.

Hoss,
Another website you can get reviews from and run speed tests (once hooked up) is: DSL REPORTS.
Can't hurt to bounce the results from the above mentioned link's compression test off of what this site says.

Re:DSL or Cable Modem??

Hoss,
We have gone with cable, Satelite, and Verizon DSL and we are the happiest with Verizon. We very seldom if ever go down and they have great packages.

Satelite internet was horrible...... If you notice the delay when they interview reporters in Afganistan well thats Satelite!!! It was fast after that little delay before every packet. (yes it was two way satelite)

Cable was fast during the day and would bog down in the evenings here (when alot of people where online in the area).

Hope that helps.....

James

Why the compression test? What does that tell you. Oddly enough, I just ran that on my computer here at work and came out at 237 K. I'm supposed to be on a T1 here....but it's actually running a lot slower than DSL normally would. Interesting.... :-

Re:DSL or Cable Modem??

Hoss,
You can run the other tests.... But they show pretty much the same thing. The image test and the compression test was the same on mine.

I think it is how many computers are doing what? in relation to how much you individual computer is getting.

James

Here is the DSL reports shortcut to their test to make it faster to get to http://www.dslreports.com/stest

Re:DSL or Cable Modem??

The DSL REPORTS test and Toast.net test came up the same.

Nice to have another one to be able to guage...

Hoss,
Your computer at home is going to be faster is about all I can say on that connection speed you are getting at work!

Yes, I'm very happy with Verizon's service although they have a lot of "ferners" on the help desk; hard to understand sometimes, but helpful. I tossed cableTV service too and went with satellite service. After 4 weeks with TiVo, I'll never go back!

Re:DSL or Cable Modem??

Comma,
I wired mine the same way. ;D
Line into modem, through one filter to distribution block to phones in the rest of the house and garage.

Much simpler to trouble-shoot too.

Re:DSL or Cable Modem??

I guess so. I've always thought of my work computer as being pretty fast. Wonder if it has anything to do with the 180 people we've got running off of the same line??

Re:DSL or Cable Modem??

Here at my home/office at present I am testing at 692 kbs but my wife is also on her comp which is networked off of this one (she is also on the internet).

I am generally in the mid 980's when I test and pay for the 1mbs package.
