DSL or Cable Modem??
Re:DSL or Cable Modem??
I'm paying $29.99 for my cable modem. The cheapest DSL around is $29.99 for the first 6 months and then $54.99 after that and they are requiring at least a 1 year contract. :
Unfortunately for some people, both are not an option around here and they get stuck with DSL.

Wow...that's cheap. For me cable modem will cost $45.95 and DSL will cost $34.95. Neither have contracts...which is a big plus for me. I hate doing contracts on stuff like this. :

For cable I'd have to install a cable outlet. Hmmmm.....
they've also come out with wireless pc cards so u dont have to do a cable drop to each computer in your house.
not saying i recommend cable, i have it and hate it. it is always out. could just be my service provider though :

Re:DSL or Cable Modem??
I've had both cable modem, and most recently DSL, and prefer the DSL connection. Here's the reason. My cable provider has different levels of service in an effort to a) make more money and b) to keep the bandwidth as wide as possible. Consequently as more and more folks got on the net with cable modems, the thruput was reduced last year to 500K bps. for "standard service". I told them to take a hike, and hooked up with Verizon DSL. I've had excellent service with them and my bandwidth is around 1M bps. My monthly DSL rate is being held at $29.99 a month with the level of phone service I have with them.
Re:DSL or Cable Modem??
I work or the cable company, so I get my cable modem free ;D, but as a honest installer, I think you would be more satisfied with DSL. If you arn't downloading a bunch of stuff, DSL sounds cheaper, and yet waaaaayyyy faster than dialup.

If (any of) you do the wireless route please make sure you are not allowing an open network - a friend of mine said he picked up sixteen open wireless nets in one subdivision just riding around with his laptop running. Of course, he happens to be a networking guru and has installed several hundred wireless access points/home networks. Helps to be friendly with the department next door's networking guy.

People have no idea how many wireless networks are "open". Some important ones are included!!!! THey had a show on the Discovery Channel one day where they drove around Washington D.C. checking for networks...........

Well...Comcast refuses to honor the promotional offer that's STILL on their website...they say it expired....so I think I'm gonna go with DSL. It's cheaper, probably plenty fast for what I need, and they've got a good promotion going. Thanks for all of the input.
Re:DSL or Cable Modem??
One point to remember is that with DSL you can only be so many miles from a switching station, many of us have had to go to cable instead of DSL due to this.
Make sure you can really get the DSL where you're at, I had two sales attempts that failed when it came time to actually do the DSL hookup.

It's 3 miles to be exact (so I'm told). They've tested my line and say I can get DSL, but I guess it's not certain until it's actually hooked up.
Re:DSL or Cable Modem??
Hoss, if you go with DSL, you will need a filter on each telephone jack. My provider, Verizon, supplied 5 filters and 1 wall plate filter. Recently though, I installed a "whole house" filter at my service entrance and connected my DSL modem on a dedicated line upstream to the filter. Also keep in mind if you have satellite TV service, your receiver's telephone modem will need to be filtered too. This was my reason for going with a whole house filter.
