was driving along today and clunk..........

I was doing a pond service for a customer, waiting for the thing to fill back up....... soooooooo I head out to look arond the area. Driving slow because I don't know the backroads and I do know there are lots of critters running around. So I am going about 20 mph and I tap the breaks to get a better fix on where the next ridge is and I hear/ feal a clunk........ followed by a bit of a grinding sound.... Great, I bet I just went metal to metal on a front pad , figure there goes the money I just made. I get to the stop sign, stop, still grinding a bit but sounds weird......... so I flip a u turn and go back to where I heard the noise. I see something in the road so I stop, get out, grab it. What the heck??? its a 11/16th or so bolt, bout 2 inches long..... was it in the road? coincidence??? well I pull over and lock the wheels all the way left, look, then all the way right.... What the heck? a "hole" in my caliper, right where it would attatch to the hub assembly??? I grab the caliper, sure enough its loose, bottom bolt is there but not tight, wiggle it a bit and manage to catch threads,,,, whip out the 1/2 inch impact gun, air line and impact socket set and put that thing back on there to stay this time. Now I wonder how the heck this could have happened??? AHHHHHHHHHHH, I know, brakes had been clicking since I had the truck in for #1 injector and U joints, I remember them telling me that my pads would be next thing I would need to replace, well sounds to me like they inspected them and never tightened the one properly and it took till now for it to fall out. Thank the good lord I was going slow and had the tools to fix it with me. Had I been traveling down the turnpike at 70 or so with my family and had this happen who knows what would have happend, locked rotor, out of control.... not to mention never being able to pinpoint a bolt that had been traveling 70 mph as well...... What has it come to that you have to wory about checking all the bolts/ nuts on your vehicle after somebody else wrenched on it?

Better than my experience. I had all four ball joints done at the dealer and when I got it back I had a clunk noise every time I turned to the left and tapped the brakes. Got under there one day and they had forgotten to even put the bolts back in the caliper.

That's why I don't worry about voiding my warentie, I don't want them working on it anyway. I may not know what's wrong with it, but I'll sure at least fix the things right on my way to fixing what was initally the problem

It's amazing now adays, how much stuff you have to worry about.

Nobody but me touches any part of my vehicles, with the possible exception of the passenger's butt on the seat chusion. It is too expensive and there is too much at stake. I feel sorry for the people who for whatever reason either cannot or choose not to do their own maintenance.

"whip out the 1/2 inch impact gun, air line and impact socket set "

Now that's what I'm talkin' about! Very cool. Glad you fixed it.

When I finally get my onboard air rigged up, I'm gonna run two air lines so I dual weild some impact guns, just because. Something's getting torqued, baby!
