Re:Diet

I tried that crap, it worked in a way. I lost weight but from losing so much water and it came right back when I went off of it. I finally got smart and decided I would just be fat and happy. ;D We are all gonna die someday might as well enjoy it while we're here. I am trying to ease up on how much I eat and eat a little more sensibly, like not everything fried as usual. Eating some more veggies, drinking a V8 every morning(nasty sh-t). Stuff like this is working just slower, I have dropped about 5 lbs in about 3 weeks. But that is a small amount considering I have been almost 300 pounds recently. Good luck!

If you're talking about the Atkins diet, I am on it. The big thing to watch is carbohydrates. If you go to http://atkinscenter.com, you can find a bunch of information on it. So far, I haven't had a problem it and I've lost about 4 pounds since starting the diet 3 days ago.

There are a lot of myths about this diet, and the "water" weight myth is one of them, even though you will lose water in the beginning. You can read more about the myths of this diet by clicking here.

FAQ from the Atkins site about water weight:

"How do you respond to the claims that all the weight loss on Atkins is water weight?
It is typical of any weight loss plan, including the Induction phase of Atkins, that during the first few days, or even the first week, some of the weight loss will be water loss. However, when you follow a controlled carbohydrate eating plan, your body switches from burning carbohydrate to burning fat for energy, resulting in the loss of stored fat. In fact, research shows that even when water is lost during the first few days on a controlled carbohydrate nutritional approach, the water balance soon returns to normal, and the weight loss comes from fat. The most dramatic sign of this loss is seeing the inches drop off your measurements."

The thing is, you're never supposed to go off of it, but you are supposed to increase your amount of carbs by 5grams a day per week after the first two weeks. You're not supposed to have more than 20 grams of carbs per day for the first 14 days. I have been eating a lot of eggs, cheese, meat etc. We're making Salmon tonight, and having blackened Tuna when I get back from my trip.

The other thing that's important to remember is that you need to take vitamin supplements for the first two weeks, and ketosis strips are a + if you're really going to track how much fat you're losing.

Re:Diet

Diets really depend on your metabolism, amount of exercise you do and if you have any underlying conditions.

Heres a small outline of what 'could' work.

Drink lots of water, eat less carbs/startches, eat leaner cuts of meat, eat 5-7 smaller meals, eat the fuel meals [carbs] in the a.m. and 2 hrs before exercise, do not eat anything 2 hours before bed. Also, watch them sodas and too much fruit as the sugars are tough on the system too.

Thats what works for me and depending on your lifestyle, this can be altered accordingly. I need a lot of protein, moderate carbs and low fat to drop bodyfat and gain muscle mass.

Cardio work such as walking or cardio that involves a lot of arm movement will work great. You do not need to hammer your knees on a treadmill to do this and you can burn 30% more calories with arm movement cardio like a hand bike or boxing.

Do not expect a rapid weight loss and diets that do that...will backfire fast and you will gain the weight back fast...as mentioned...its probably water that leaves in the first part of the diet not fat.

Drink lots of water.

Re:Diet

Have a heart attack and bypass surgery and you will learn real quick about dieting. You learn about reducing your "fat" intake and eating high cholesterol (ala Atkins) stuff in a hurry. Lost 40 pounds and it has stayed off for two years. I feel great, more energy, clothes fit (my new ones ) and my cholesterol is off the chart in the good direction. Lots of fruit, veggies, limited amounts of lean meat, etc. You might say a "balanced" diet of good stuff. A good exercise routine helps too.

Re:Diet

The wife is doing the no carb deal and has lost about 20 lbs last month. She's done that before but once you stop it comes back, so find stuff you can stick with. As for me I'm doing like CTD/359 said. I substitute some meals with an EAS drink or energy bar. They are high in protein and not too bad on carbs. I've lost about 30 lbs last month. Got a ways to go
Good Luck!

Re:Diet

diet a bad 4 Letter word. first the atkins...it will work but its bad for u. It stresses ur kindneys so if u have anyproblems like that try something else. and the lack of carb or starch is tough to handle and not to mention that as soon as u start to eat them again u will balloon back up(most people anyway). Check out a book by Bill Philips its called body for life it a good system and u dont go hungry...Dont get me wrong no (diet) is easy it involve changing habits and all u smokers who have quit or tried to quit know how tough that can be. the big thing is eat smart thenu can eat what u want. just an example...most american eat big dinners and only eat once or twice a day. so this is what happens u need x amount of calaries aday but spread out so u sit down for dinner and have steak, mmmm good, baked potato with cheese and sour cream. corn, another starch not a vegtable, and pie for desert. wow that was 1000 calaries but ur body only need 400 at that time so all the rest goes right to the belly for the men and other places for the ladies. A diet that has u craving food will not work its not realistic and if u cut back ur food to much u will always be hungry. 5 to 6 smaller meals adaqy is best and eat smart. Its very hard to get in the habit and the only way u will is by planing ur meals the day before. Good luck and check out the body for life book. Dont forget to get some exersize. go for a walk with ur honey ull both feel better.

Dan

Re:Diet

df5152 points out the important part...more smaller meals to keep the furnace burning.
As well, the diet has to match your needs.
I need a lot of protein and have tried lower and I lose out on my goals for my sport. High protein requires high water intake to help the kidneys.

I like the George Foreman Grill cuz it does allow some of the fat to drain off. I doubt it is a huge part of a low fat diet and it states it will reduce the fat by about 4%. 4% is 4% so I will take it that way too.

I have virtually elminated all my heavy sauces and the next thing is the last bit of junk food I induldge in...its way down compared to the two liter of Coke and the Jumbo bag of Lays I would inhale late at night.

Jack, that Atkins diet talks about the Lactose [form of sugar] in milks. Does it state that the lower fat milks have higher levels of lactose? I have never gotten the details on this but did hear that Skim milks has more lactose then whole milks.
True?

Re:Diet

I think all the health effects have yet to be proven. Duke University recently did a study about the diet and found a lot of interesting facts. See below:

DURHAM -- A new study may offer support to the long-debated Atkins diet. Researchers at Duke University found that the protein-heavy diet may help reduce unhealthy fat in the blood, and increase the amount of healthy cholesterol.

The plan, created by Robert C. Atkins, M.D., cuts back on sugar, bread and other carbohydrates -- but allows for meats and other fatty foods. Some health professional have discredit the diet for lacking scientific evidence to prove its effectiveness.

The study tracked 120 dieters--one group used the Atkins plan, the other followed the American Heart Associations low-fat diet. People on the Atkins diet lost an average of 31 pounds compared to an average loss of 20 pounds for the other group.

Triglycerides, the unhealthy fat in the blood, dropped by 49 per cent in the Atkins group versus 17 per cent on the Heart Association diet. HDL, the good type of cholesterol, went up 11 per cent for those on Atkins while it did not change for those on the heart diet.

While the recent study may encourage dieters, some people at the American Heart Association are still skeptical.

"When we make strong recommendations, especially a shift in gears, we'd like to be able to confirm that with other studies," said Dr. Robert Bonow, President of The American Heart Association.

I haven't studied up on the milk part of it yet, but I find it interesting that they recommend whole milk vs. the lowfat miks. I don't know why that is because the amount of carbs are about equal in both.

He pointed out to me that that weight was directly related to the skim milk and its high level of lactose [sugars] and this makes sense as my nieces are lactose intolerant...they were drinking 1% or skim milk. They switched to 2% and now the issue is not there.
