dead battery, VW jetta

A friend went to vegas for a week and left her VW jetta at the airport, came back to a dead battery. the last few days have been really cold (-20 this morning) and she is having it towed to a shop because she was told not to try and jump start it.

I have heard you aren't supposed to jump a car that has been sitting out like that, but I have done it before when I didn't have a choice (with no bad outcome), what is everyones opinion on jumping a car in this situation?

Like Paul said, a dead battery will freeze but even if it's not frozen, jumping it and making the alternator recharge the battery is not recommended although it will work in an emergency as you experienced. Recharging the battery with a battery charger with the battery disconnected from the car is better for the battery and the car.
