Contact Lenses hurt like heck

Ok,

So a while back I found out that my vision isn't as good as it used to be. When I went to the eye doctor, they gave me a prescription for glasses and contacts. I got both and tried the contacts out for a couple weeks but they always hurt my eyes. I had a huge problem getting them in correctly and I got frustrated. So I started using the glasses but when I'm working, they are too much of a pain to keep up with, getting in and out of the car etc.

My question is this. Anyone here have the same issue with contacts? If so, how did you overcome it? Or am I just a big wussy?

What kind of contacts are you wearing? I had problems with certain kinds when I started wearing them 10 years ago. Once I switched to Acuvue brand I've had no problems. I now wear the Acuvue Oasis contacts and they are amazing, eyes never get dry even when I wear them for a month straight without taking them out(two week contacts). Also, make sure you have them right side out , if you have them in backwards it will hurt as well.

I tried them, had the same problems you did.
I can't wear contacts, always feels like there is something in my eye.
My hands are always dirty as well.
Except for the dirty hands, my s/o also had the same problems.
We both wear glasses, not that big of a deal. We're even to the bifocal stage now. Sucks getting old.
Get the "Transitions" kind that turn into sunglasses automatically.

Ask your eye doctor to try a different brand. I have been wearing contacts for probably 27 years and have been through several brands as my eyes changed.
I also have been wearing acuvue for a few years now and am very pleased. There are even different styles within a brand. Your eye doctor will be able to get some that do not bother you. If they still bother you after about 10-15 minuets, chances are they will always bother you. Keep that in mind when trying a different brand or style.

Hopefully end of this year or first part of next I will be getting the lasik surgery and be done with contacts for good!

Like a few others have said, talk with your eye doctor about it. He may suggest a different solution or try a different brand of lenses.

Then you have to build up to wearing them for longer periods of time. 2 hrs first day and maybe add 15-30 mins each day after. Helps your eyes adjust to the feeling. If you stop wearing them for any length of time (like weeks) you may have to start the desensitization process over again.

I've worn contacts off and on over the years. Some I couldn't tell were there, others never really settled in and I just learned to live with it.

So true...try a different brand as this can make all the difference in the world!!!! If your new to wearing them, yes it will take some time to allow your eyes to adjust, however after 2 weeks you should be more comfortable in them. Go back to the Dr and ask them to have another brand "fitted to your eyes." They're obligated to help you find the correct fit.

I have the same issue as you Jack, very uncomfortable, tried 10 different kind with no noticeable difference. Have astigmatism in both eyes also. They just felt like I had an eyelash in my eye every minute I wore them. Tried getting past that then they started drying out on me more than I likes, so the combo of things just took me back to glasses. I hate glasses, but I don't have money for lasik right now so I'm just being patient.

Your being a wussy... Suck it up man...

Ok, all joking aside, Ive been wearing contacts for 15 years and I tried switching brands few years back and was miserable.

It does take some adjusting to get used to, mostly the ingress and egress of the lens'. Once you get used to the feel of them on your eye its no biggy. My usual quip to those considering contacts is, if you can touch your eyeball with your finger and not freak out, then you can wear contacts.

Like the other, I suggest trying a different brand. Talk with your opt about the troubles your having and see what he suggests.

Not sure what type of lens' you need, but contrary to what the other folks said, I couldnt stand the accu vue's. My preferred lens is the Focal Frequency 55. Point being, each of us is different and you gotta find what works for you.

I would definitly stick with the contacts. Once you become used to them you will be glad you did so.

That, or maybe your doc did not measure your eyes correctly, or the eye guy messed up the Rx.

Probably just the fact that you've never worn them. I tried some one time, felt like gouging out my eyes to get them out.

Get the surgery...

Thanks for the tips, guys. I appreciate it. I think the best thing for me to do at this point is to go back to the doc and see what she says. Nice looking lady by the way. I always enjoy going there. lol

I started with glasses in the 5th grade due to being near sighted. Moved to contacts when I was a freshman in high school. Wore soft contacts up until about 1982 or so and they began bothering me as well. Tried several different kinds with no luck, so I went back to glasses. In 1991, I had RK (radial keratotomy) surgery. It was the best thing I ever did for myself.

Now, I have to wear readers for up close vision, but my long distance vision is still good!

Good luck.

Tried 'em too. Hated it! I could not get comfortable and getting them in and out was always an ordeal for me.

But you can't see her without your contacts, which you can't stand to wear... life stinks sometimes, doesn't it?

I wore contacts for better than 20 years. I started when I was about 12. I recall early on, its frustrating. The big deal is getting used to touching your own eyeball. After a while, you will get used to the contacts until they get dirty and scratch your eye.
I solve my problem by dropping almost $4000 on lasik.
