Chain HELP!!
Chain HELP!!
Hi,
What type of chains are you using on your 4x4 and why? Cable or reqular Link type. Also I seem to be getting conflicting information wheather they go on all 4 tires, the rear only or the front only. I have 4 wheel ABS if that makes a difference, which it seems to according to which dodge dealer or auto parts store I go to.
Thanks for your help!

If your going to just run one set put them on the rear, company I worked for had lots of CAD failures with chains on front axle only. Or go all the way around for traction out of this world. btw when I lived up north I used chain link type, don't have expirence with cable type

i agree 1 set on the rear. chain style is the way to go but i dont put them on unless nessary. WHEN you break a cross link youll beat your truck to death. i keep them in the back all winter and only use em for back roads when snow mobiling so im going slow. highway tends to break em and thats just bad news
If you put them on the rear only you won't be able to steer which is most important. Put them on the front, let it pull for you and the rear will follow.
I just had to chain up while hunting 2 weeks ago pulling my 24' horse trailer w/ 2 horses on a narrow tight cornered mtn road. I was pushing snow with the air dam and then with the front of the trailer. There were tracks but with a dually and the slight slope to the road on the turns, the back would slide down and the trailer would follow. The turns are so tight you have to swing real wide so the trailer will clear or slightly rub the trees. With the front chained up going in 4low 3rd gear I just idled up 2 miles to where I could turn around and get the heck outa there which took me almost 2 hrs. Going back was sure easier
.
Knowing when to put them on is best, Before you need them!

i have found that regular chain links work the best. as for whether putting them on the front or back a truck pulls it self better than it pushes itself but if you have a 4x4 the frontpulls itself. chains should really only be used in extreme occasions like when your four wheel drive wont get traction. and if you want to become invincible four by fouring machine chain up all four and you can go through almost anything. if you have a two wheel drive then of course chain up the rear tires but in order to be a able to steer i always put just one chain on the front for traction that way your fornt ened gos were u want it to go not were the snow wants it to go.
or just get youself a set of these and you won't have to worry about which end to chain.

I used a set of "z" chains from Costco a couple of years ago. They zig zaz across the face of the tire in a z pattern. I don't know if they have any better traction or not but they sure ride a lot better. I can't stand the way the regular chains make the truck bounce

. It seems that there is no hard and fast rule, it just depends on your mood I guess.
