Buckshotmckee: NEED VW JETTA HELP/ADVICE!
My wife's 1.8t Jetta 2002 is overheating now on a regular basis on hot days with the A/C on.
Here is what I have observed:
-Fans not coming on from what I can tell.
-A/C will not blow cold unless going down the road at speed (also will not overheat at highway speed).
-No leaks of coolant/reservoir at right level.
Any advice or direction would be appreciated.
My gut says its a fan issue or possibly a water pump.

I PM'd him, so he'll know about it...
Probably a sensor or a thermostat. If the sensor takes a dunp, the fans will not know when to turn on.
Trade it for a CTD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good luck with it...

Sorry it took a bit to get back to ya, father day outing with the fam.
From what your telling me it sounds like the fan control module took a dump on ya. If ya run a hot wire to the the fans do they come on? If not then the fans are bad. There are several different fans that they use on them so you'll have to disassemble and remove so you can get the right one. You may still have a bad fan module after replacing the fans, just a little heads up. I've seen it before were one will short out the other. These/this is more then likely your issue.
Now! There are issues with waterpumps, is this your problem, probably not from what you've told me. These waterpumps have a plastic impellar and they are prone to come apart or just fall off of the shaft, in this case the vehicle will overheat all the time. I've seen waterpump issues with 20k (2 weeks ago had one towed in) to 150k before they fail.
How many miles on the Jetta? You also have a recall or possibly 2 open on it. If ya PM me your vin I'll run it for ya tomorrow when I get back to work.

Yeah, I think we just got a letter in the mail for a couple of recalls...I'll have to check but I think they are interior related issues.
What does a fan module run in price ball park?
I will try the hot wire thing for the fans and see if they kick on...If not I'll be buying some fans.
I appreciate your guys help!!! THANKS!!

Fan switch is in the plastic flange in the side of the head. If it's black, you should swap it out to the green, updated switch.
The fan module is located in the engine compartment lower left, below front longmember.
