Break room 2nd week of May.

Where is everyone? First time I have been here for ages and the place is deserted. Was the janitor fired? Why is there no coffee? Where is the ph00, hot water and other stuff?

Oh well, threw out what was in "coffee" pot and made fresh coffee from what I hope is coffee in the container labeled "coffee". It smelled strange. Brought some Chinese ph00 for those inclined that way. Also left some fresh mutton in the fridge for those who want to fry it up for breakfast. Bring your own eggs. Don't take any notice of the newspaper article below. We all know we can't trust anything the media say. The guy on the side of the road who sold me this mutton assured me that it was fresh on the hoof just yesterday.

China says 904 people were arrested for selling fake, spoiled, or adulterated meat over three months, indicating notorious food safety problems persist despite a crackdown.

State media portrayed the arrests as part of a national crackdown that will now focus on dairy products.

Xinhua News Agency said suspects sold meat that had been injected with water to increase its weight, or sold rat and fox flesh as mutton.

It said a total of 382 cases were uncovered and 20,000 tons of unsafe meat seized from January.

Oops. Living on the other side of this messed up planet has messed me up.

I have a legitimate excuse why that happened, but not going to say what it is because the crowd that hangs around here will just use it as an excuse to hassle me

Will one of the mods please fix the title.

Here have some more

Complain, question and gripe. China hasn't changed you a bit! Oh, and BTW, hope you didn't strain yerself on thinkin' up a title for this weeks thread Stan!

Did I mention it was good to see you Stan?

Mornin' saints and sinners!

It's Sunday, May 5th. GET TO CHuRCH! Y'all need it!

1798 - U.S. Secretary of War William McHenry ordered that the USS Constitution be made ready for sea. The frigate was launched on October 21, 1797, but had never been put to sea.

1814 - The British attacked the American forces at Ft. Ontario, Oswego, NY.

1865 - The Thirteenth Amendment was ratified, abolishing slavery in the U.S.

1886 - A bomb exploded on the fourth day of a workers' strike in Chicago, IL.

1916 - U.S. Marines invaded the Dominican Republic.

1942 - General Joseph Stilwell learned that the Japanese had cut his railway out of China and was forced to lead his troops into India.

1945 - The Netherlands and Denmark were liberated from **** control.

1945 - A Japanese balloon bomb exploded on Gearhart Mountain in Oregon. A pregnant woman and five children were killed.

1961 - Alan Shepard became the first American in space when he made a 15 minute suborbital flight.

1987 - The U.S. congressional Iran-Contra hearings opened.

1994 - Michael Fay was caned in Singapore for vandalism. He received four lashes. We need punishment like that here in the U.S. It would lessen the strain on the prisons and might actually be a deterrent to people thinking of committing a crime.

Today's thought:
God doesn't require us to succeed; he only requires that you try.

It WAS a strain. Not used to thinking.

Good thought for the day. See, I can do compliments too. One a day.

Took a quick look at the breakroom a few days ago and saw that you were trying to be nice. Did it work? Did it stick?

"To the Participant", by R.P. Smith

Here's to the pickers and the singers
you'll never see on CMT;
To the undiscovered poets
who read the prose for free;

To the roper whose loop comes back empty;
...the barrel racer whose horse don't bend;
To the roughstock man who is dismounted
before the whistle signals his ride's end;

To all the folks who keep on tryin,
though their efforts seem for naught-
They get back up, brush off the dust,
and give it all they've got.

The saddest song in the world
is the one that goes unsung.
So, here's to life's participants
who do their thing for fun-

And if your talents never raise you
far above the rest-
Well, all that really matters, friend,
is that you gave it your best!

Been feeding cattle. Got an 83 IHC feed truck that the air system is giving us fits. Front half of the tank (one tank, two compartments) had the drain replaced with a plug, filled up, and shoved a bunch of goo into the air governor, rendering it inoperable, causing the compressor to not kick out, pegging the gauges, and burning up the compressor drive belt and pulley.

Smashed stalks on a wheat field yesterday. Wind was blowing the wrong way. Headed south I often had to stop and let the dust cloud blow by me so I could see the rows of corn stalks to keep my track.

Was hoping to get a Saturday off before planting started. No such luck. Going to take a long weekend once planting is done. Maybe we can start this week, long range forecast looks like maybe spring is going to stick around this time.

Spring finally got to southern Alberta. It is 72F, clear blue sky and not a breath of wind. After the winter we had, it feels quite HOT today. Chores are finally getting done.

Stan, good to see you. Don't worry about the title, it works here.

NE f, left a reply in your other thread about the truck. You've got allot of work ahead of you.

Rained here again this morning but it doesn't matter, I wasn't here.

Looking at info on chickens. Thinking I might buy some this weekend if I can get the stock tank I was given home for some place to put them. Thinking some leghorns and guineas. Need something that has sense to run from predators being down in this valley. And something that eats bugs, particularly ticks.

Also thinking of building some structures for swallows to nest on. Them and hawks are the only birds I really care for.

Morning all.

Monday, May 6th.

1851 - The mechanical refrigerator was patented by Dr. John Gorrie.

1861 - Arkansas became the ninth state to secede from the Union.

1877 - Chief Crazy Horse surrendered to U.S. troops in Nebraska.

1915 - Babe Ruth hit his first major league home run while playing for the Boston Red Sox.

1937 - The German airship Hindenburg crashed and burned in Lakehurst, NJ. Thirty-six people (of the 97 on board) were killed.

1941 - Joseph Stalin assumed the Soviet premiership.

1941 - Bob Hope gave his first USO show at California's March Field.

1942 - During World War II, the Japanese seized control of the Philippines. About 15,000 Americans and Filipinos on Corregidor surrendered to the Japanese.

1945 - Axis Sally made her final propaganda broadcast to Allied troops.

1960 - U.S. President Eisenhower signed the Civil Rights Act of 1960.

1962 - The first nuclear warhead was fired from the Polaris submarine.

1997 - Army Staff Sgt. Delmar G. Simpson was sentenced to 25 years in prison for raping six trainees at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland.

1997 - Four health-care companies agreed to a settlement of $600 million to hemophiliacs who had contracted AIDS from tainted blood between 1978-1985.

1999 - A parole board in New York voted to release Amy Fisher. She had been in jail for 7 years for shooting her lover's wife, Mary Jo Buttafuoco, in the face.

Today's thought:
You only get one sunrise and one sunset a day, and you only get so many days on the planet. A good photographer does the math and doesn't waste either.

C0ffee & ph00 have been made 'specially for y0u!

The chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) is a domesticated fowl, a subspecies of the Red Junglefowl. As one of the most common and widespread domestic animals with a population of more than 24 billion in 2003, there are more chickens in the world than any other species of bird. Humans keep chickens primarily as a source of food, consuming both their meat and their eggs.

Chickens are omnivores. In the wild, they often scratch at the soil to search for seeds, insects and even larger animals such as lizards or young mice.

Chickens are gregarious birds and live together in flocks. Roosters crowing (a loud and sometimes shrill call) is a territorial signal to other roosters. However, crowing may also result from sudden disturbances within their surroundings. Hens cluck loudly after laying an egg, and also to call their chicks.

Under natural conditions, most birds lay only until a clutch is complete, and they will then incubate all the eggs. Many domestic hens will also do this–and are then said to "go broody". The broody hen will stop laying and instead will focus on the incubation of the eggs (a full clutch is usually about 12 eggs). She will "sit" or "set" on the nest, protesting or pecking in defense if disturbed or removed, and she will rarely leave the nest to eat, drink, or dust-bathe. While brooding, the hen maintains the nest at a constant temperature and humidity, as well as turning the eggs regularly during the first part of the incubation. To stimulate broodiness, an owner may place many artificial eggs in the nest, or to stop it they may place the hen in an elevated cage with an open wire floor.

At the end of the incubation period (about 21 days), the eggs, if fertile, will hatch. Development of the egg starts only when incubation begins, so they all hatch within a day or two of each other, despite perhaps being laid over a period of two weeks or so. Before hatching, the hen can hear the chicks peeping inside the eggs, and will gently cluck to stimulate them to break out of their shells. The chick begins by "pipping"; pecking a breathing hole with its egg tooth towards the blunt end of the egg, usually on the upper side. The chick will then rest for some hours, absorbing the remaining egg yolk and withdrawing the blood supply from the membrane beneath the shell (used earlier for breathing through the shell). It then enlarges the hole, gradually turning round as it goes, and eventually severing the blunt end of the shell completely to make a lid. It crawls out of the remaining shell, and its wet down dries out in the warmth of the nest.

The hen will usually stay on the nest for about two days after the first egg hatches, and during this time the newly hatched chicks live off the egg yolk they absorb just before hatching. Any eggs not fertilized by a rooster will not hatch, and the hen eventually loses interest in these and leaves the nest. After hatching, the hen fiercely guards the chicks, and will brood them when necessary to keep them warm, at first often returning to the nest at night. She leads them to food and water; she will call them to edible items, but seldom feeds them directly. She continues to care for them until they are several weeks old, when she will gradually lose interest and eventually start to lay again. (There are people like this in the world, generally living on welfare and participating in every government program available to them, but they are NOT chickens. They are leaches. There is a difference!)

Hope this helped!
