G'day. Just a quick fly-by 'cuz it is getting close to my bed time.
Hey NE f, Google silkies. I only discovered these last week because the Chinese wife of a Canadian friend of mine was eating soup with some black meat in it. She told me it was chicken. I told her that it could not be chicken because chicken meat is not black. She convinced me that there are black chickens. Google it and you will discover that Silkies have silk smooth, pure white feathers, but their skin, meat and even the bones are all black. Apparently this black meat is healthier than a normal chicken because it has medicinal qualities. These chickens are said to make great pets.
Spring has suddenly sprung here. Today for the first time this year I was outside without a jacket. It was even borderline hot.
Outa here. Y'all be nice to one another. If you are in a bad mood, go kick the DTR janitor. He thrives of that because it makes him feel loved. Do NOT mistake the dragon for the janitor. It is an easy mistake to make.

Looking at info on chickens. Thinking I might buy some this weekend if I can get the stock tank I was given home for some place to put them. Thinking some leghorns and guineas. Need something that has sense to run from predators being down in this valley. And something that eats bugs, particularly ticks.
Also thinking of building some structures for swallows to nest on. Them and hawks are the only birds I really care for.

Morning all.
Buying chickens to eat ticks I agree with. Attracting hawks that will eat chickens I can't quite follow. I think a simpler solution would be to send me the money you'd spend on the chickens, that way you won't suffer the heart ache of losing a pet chicken to a hawk and having to clean up all the mess left behind.
Morning all.

Amen to that!!!! It might make some of the kids today rethink their high and mighty status too.
From someone whose family used to raise layers, uh no way. We had 4, 400 foot houses with 4 rows of cages each. 3 hens to the cage. The whole family picked eggs twice a day. When they layed out, they went to an un-named soup company. I still don't eat that soup.
However, the neighbors Guinnie's (SP) are welcome anytime to eat ticks.

Chaikwa, I meant about the different breeds. White leghorns sound like the best bet, they tend to be flighty, by what info I have found.
I'd like some guineas but man, talk about expensive, about $5 apiece, and a minimum order of 30!
Hawks, eagles, and swallows are the only birds I really care for, but I only want to built nesting structure for the swallows.
I just need something to get rid of ticks. The dog has a bunch on him, Frontline didn't work too well last year, and the stuff I am trying this year is no better. I know where there's about 10 pounds of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, but I'd rather not disturb it!

The biggest advantage the Brits had over the Germans was experience. They had fought in the desert before. So they had standards for sanitation and such. The Germans didn't. From what I've read, the German encampments were real crapholes. Literally.

Boss' dad and I caught another calf this evening. Makes the third set of twins, and they aren't taking care of both, so the one they ignore gets to be a bottle baby. Excluding the first-calvers, half the calves we have on the ground are twins so far. Hope they don't keep it up.
Had about 5 or 6 that, I don't know how, still hadn't dropped their calves this morning, on the one pasture. They were really close, one did drop a calf this afternoon.
If we bag a bunch of corn this fall I am going to suggest renting another grain cart. I think in good irrigated corn, the combine could keep two carts busy. I think the boss might put on another cart once his kid's about out of college. He took over a combine last year for wheat.
Should be planting in a few days, but thinking about having to back a Steiger and planter out of, then into, a corner, to plant it all, just doesn't sound too fun to me. It was bad enough with the straight tractor, being able to do a loop in the corner and not doing any backing. And it seems like I always get to plant the fields that have a fence along them, that looks like it was set by a drunk buss turd, it has so many jogs in it.
And we wonder why I can't plant any more acres in a day, even though I am running 4 more rows than the other two planters! At least I won't have to stop for fertilizer as often, moving up from 180 to 250 gallon tanks, should be able to fill twice a day, instead of 4 times a day.
Now, if we could figure out why 6 of my 16 rows plant way less than they are supposed to be planting.........

She continues to care for them until they are several weeks old, when she will gradually lose interest and eventually start to lay again. (There are people like this in the world, generally living on welfare and participating in every government program available to them, but they are NOT chickens. They are leaches. There is a difference!)

Mornin. OL's BD is tomorrow, but I took today off to pamper her. I'm getting the kids up for school and such so she can sleep in
Coffee is a little weak this morning, so I ran it back through and put some more grounds in it.
Stay motivated...
