Question Best way to kill weeds coming through my gravel driveway?

I've got lots of weeds growing through my gravel driveway. I was thinking I would buy one of those larger sprayers (carrying type) and put gasoline and spray that on the weeds.

My thought process being that I bet gasoline is less expensive than whatever Lowe's or Home Depot would sell for large scale weed removal ... and that gas will kill the weeds.

I think Round-up and stuff like that are good for hitting smaller spots like cracks in sidewalks, etc. But I need to cover more terrain than that.

What do you guys suggest? Is gas a stupid idea?

I spray Roundup on my few hundred acres to kill weeds? the beans are roundup ready. Just take a saturday and spray it with a hand sprayer. Or get an atv sprayer? Gas would be ok too I guess, do the math and see if the price and stuff justifys?

The soil will not breakdown gasoline very well and can leach into the water table easily, I would not use that.

If you have broadleaf weeds use ortho weed b gone. If you have weeds and grass use ortho grass/weed killer. Then go with a soil sterilant but make sure it's not going to rain for several days, it stays active in the soil for serval days and can leach away from the driveway.

MasseyMan, do you think he can buy the same type of chemicals you would use? I have to have a chemical card to buy chemicals now, due to government requirements. I think that came into effect after Oklahoma City.

if you can go and buy it for yourself, buy Glyfos. it is a generic brand of Roundup, and works just as well. You will need some surfactant to make the chemical stick to the weeds if you plan on spraying it on with a back pack sprayer, or a 12v that is on a fourwheeler or lawn mower. Just go and buy some Lemon Joy dish detergent and give it a good hard squirt into the tank. no more than one squirt though. Then go and spray, it will take approx 1-2 weeks for the plants to die.

Another chemical is gramoxone. Used on peanuts. Spray it on the weeds in the morning, and they will be dead and brown in the afternoon. very costly though.

Here's the real deal;

http://www.pestproducts.com/pramitol.htm

You need to be very concious of wind, and runoff as the results are irreversible. Generally two ounces of pramitol to one gallon of water works well. I loaned some to a neighbor once and he applied it on a very windy day and wiped out an entire section of his yard. Contrary to the products claim of one year, he could not get anything to grow for about four years. For any type of vegetation control there is nothing better.

How about bleach? It's biodegradeable, just be careful.

It may take a while to work, but Round Up works good.

I use Eliminator. It's Wal-Marts version of Round-up and works just as good.

Round Up or Ortho Triox, best used on a sunny day above 70. It is transfered to the roots through photosynthesis.
Wife just did the driveway on Sunday. I recommend the concentrate (like 16 oz.'s, about $22.00 at Lowes). Nice little 2 Gal. pump up garden sprayer, my Weed Whacker hasn't ran in two years...........................

The burning isn't a bad idea, but dosen't do much for future growth.

Yeah, the burning sounds OK, but if it doesn't prevent future growth...

On second thought, I could imagine my barn going up in flames, so I think I'll stick to a chemical.

Think what I'll do is combine all the chemical above into one sprayer. Hmmmm. Maybe I'll just spray my whole yard with that solution and not have to mow again.

go to the local asphault plant and buy 50 gallons of seal coat. coat your gravel with that.
You can buy 5 gallon buckets at most home improvement stores, but it will cost about 1/5 from the asphault plant.

How is that going to work out with a gravel driveway?
Tell you what I have been wanting is the grindings (or whatever ya call it's) they get from grinding up old apshalt. I've seen people use it and end up with a decent looking driveway.
