Best deer gun
I'm looking into getting a rifle in the next couple of months. I'll mainly be hunting deer. Just curious what everyone else shoots. Wanting to know brand and caliber. Also what scope. Thanks - Max

I think you will get many opinions on what is best around here
Best or not, I use a Remington 700 BDL chambered for .30-06. Synthetic stock/stainless barrel (I like blued/walnut better but it always seems to rain/be really misty when I get a pass to go hunting, so I got what made sense). Cheapy scope for now, but looking at a Leupold VX-III or a Swarovsky.

depends on where you will be hunting but you cant go wrong with a 30-06 what i shoot with a bushnell 3x9 scope. or thee are a few good choices a 7mm w/ 3x9 if ya shoot long range or a marlin 30-30 with a 4x if ya are shooting 100yds or less all three are good guns the only thing i can say is get a bolt action they are the most accurate and with practice can be shot just as fast as and auto, oh and another thing get wood a little heaver but again more accurate my synthetic stock makes the gun jump i liked my wood winchester better then my remington 710

Everyones gun is the best! I know there will be a million opinions, just wanting to see what people like. I'm kinda leaning toward a 700 Rem also. Not sure on caliber. Thinking 30.06, 7mm or 300.
Also forgot to ask, Do you perfer synthetic or wood stock?

One thing on the Rem 700. Trigger pull was not where I wanted it when I bought it. You can search for "Remington trigger crisp" or "Timney trigger" to see how to fix it. I took mine to a gunsmith and let the pros adjust it for me. It is nice and smooth now.
Didn't mind the synthetic stock once I took it to the range and got used to it. The only rifle I had ever really used before that was an M14 while in the Navy

If you are hunting deer in TX then a .22 is adequate I use a 700 Rem 7mm mag. Used a 30.06 for years and wouldn't go back for anything. Much flatter and hits harder. Also use it for elk.

I use a Remington Model 700 Synthitic stock 270 with a Nikon Prostaff 3x9 scope. Love the Nikon Prostaff got one on my muzzleloader too. I love the Remington model 700 also. I have it in a .222 cal. too. I like the 270 but i rather have the 30-06.

Nothing wrong with the 30-06, but my dad's rather partial to his Browning BAR in .300 Win. Mag. A bit overkill for deer, but it will get the job done and on more than one if they're standing next to each other.
Of course I've seen a 30-30 savage pump gun take more deer than I care to remember.

If you are gonna hunt Tennessee, or similar, then probably the most useful rifle would be a Marlin lever-action, in caliber of your choice, with good old open sights.
Stand on your hind legs and shoot like a man.
If you want a bolt-action, any of the claw-extractor Mauser-style, such as Pre-64 model 70 Win., Ruger 77, and others in .30-06.
A large diameter, low power scope is best for south-east type terrain, if you just have to have one.

Nobody likes 30-30's?
I thought that those were pretty common deer hunting rifles.
Of course, only time I ever went deer hunting was with a .22, and I think that I was six, and I didn't have any bullets, and I don't think I had a trigger either...

Here we have to hunt mainly in brush and there are rare opportunities at the 500 yard+ shots.
I maily use my Marlin 30-30 lever action , but I prefer my 30-06 Savage bolt action.

it really all depends on how far the average shot is where your hunting. we have a ranch in Idaho and shoot elk, mule deer, and whitetail up to 800yrds and i have videos to prove it lol. we shoot an Christianson Arms 338/378 with a Sheppard scope that has the range finder built in it. here in california most of the shots are pretty close so here i shoot an Wheatherbee 280. like i said, all depends on the AVERAGE distance you will be shooting.

My main choice for a gun is a Win. 308 magnum,I own one and so does my dad. My dad has already dropped deer stabnding on are back porch(in Pa) while the deer is 450-500yds away standing out on the peach orchard. Thjen they outlawed the use of rifles where I lived down there so I used a 12 guage, but now that we moved I can start using the good ole .308 again.
