Talking Battery ?

Ok I Have A Battery I Pulled Out Of A Car- Took It In The Basement Put It On The Charger- It Started Out Last Night Reading 10v But Battery Is Frozen - Ok Ill See What Happens 24 Hours Later Still Frozen However Reading 12v And Instead Of .3 Amps From Charger Its Taking 2.5 Amps .
Now I Always Thought If A Battery Froze It Was Junk - So What Do I Have ?
Cant Belive Battery Is Still Frozen Basement Is 40 Degrees .+ Its Been On The Charger For More Than 24 Hrs.
Let Me Know What You Think .

I found this searching

Freezing:
Yes a battery can freeze because part of the electrolyte is water; but a maintained battery will not freeze under normal operating conditions. i.e.: an average deep cycle lead acid battery at a 50% state of charge will freeze at about -24 degrees centigrade and -16 when 75% discharged (which will never happen ...right? ) However, even with this in mind we prefer clients to bury insulated battery enclosures to help protect batteries from extreme temperatures.

I'm guessing that means your battery is junk? I could be wrong

But, i think if a battery freezes its junk.

From past experience, if a battery freezes it will never be very good again dispite charging ect. Seems like it warps the plates etc. Also, I know I dont need to warn you about the rather explosive possibilities of charging a frozen battery. Perhaps you lucked out and it wasnt frozen all the way, just a skim on the top.

I never thought of that. He is lucky it didn't blow up on him seeing that charging a battery like that will build up hydrogen and oxygen in it as the electrons run through the water. And one spark- BOOM!. He must have lucked out and the relief valves weren't frozen. That is if it was a Maintenance free battery.

Is there any chance that it's not frozen but just low on water and looks like it's frozen when you look into the cells? Hard to figure how it can stay frozen while on the charger, inside and near a heater.

I've had ones that were slushy that survived. Frozen solid might be another story.

They will take a surprisingly long time to thaw out. I think I'd wait until it's thawed before attempting to charge.

I think it's a matter of the ice pushing the plates or connections around in there. Can't say I'd hook one up in the house though.
