Re:Acreage tractor purchase help

The bush hog (brand name), or rotary mmower, is like Gary said, but I will add that it has 20 lb swinging blades on it which will cut through small tress and split rocks . I have a 5' on mine and it doesn't cut anything slack, cut it cuts the heck out of anything it goes over! It has a huge amountof mass so that it can cut through most anything. This makes it dangerous when you hit a stump.

If you get one, make sure it has a stump jumper. This should be standard on the newer ones. The stump jumper is a big "pan" that the blades attach to so if you hit an immovable object, such as a large stump, the mower will jump over it instead of grabbing the stump and suddenly propelling the entire tractor in X direction, while throwing you off and possibly under the mower.
These are also called "rough cut mowers, to be distinguished from "finishing" mowers. You wouldn't cut your lawn with a rough cut mower.

The blade is usually just that, a blade such as you would see on a motor grader, but to be mounted on the 3 point hitch.

Most can have the angle changed for moving dirt in one direction or the other, and is very effective for clearing snow. It will not dig well as it is not heavy enough in most cases. Some can have the angle changed it 2 directions, and can be used to dig/clear ditches.

Wait till you hear about the PULVERIZER. ;D

Gary,
You don't have to tell me about clay I got a plenty here! The pulverizer doesn't do so much for that because the stuff is so sticky.
This is what I'm talking about:

Are you talking about something different?

Chris

Re:Acreage tractor purchase help

One other thing that you need to look at if you're going to go with a hydostatic trans is the type of pedal they use. Kubota, and now New Holland and Case IH us a Rocker style pedal. You make the tractor go forward you rock the toe of you shoe down, to make the tractor go in reverse you rock you heel down. this seems easy enough but it really difficult if you have small feet as I do. The make those simple movements I have to pick my foot up and move it every time. Deere on the other hand uses two different pedals on for forward and one for reverse. The brake pedals are on the left side of the Deere but on the Kubota, New Holland, and Case IH they are on the same side as the hydo pedal. ??? With the pedals all on the same side it makes it hard to power slide the tractor while grading. It's probeble something you can get used to but felt very strange on the ones I drove.

I've decided on a shuttle shift instead of the hydo for this reason. Not a big deal since the shuttle shifts have auto reversers, but something you might want to check out non the less.

I'd really like on of these but $40,000 to $50,000 is a little much.

110 Deere TLB
Live PTO and hydraulics mean that you do not have to have the clutch engaged (and tractor either moving or in neutral) to have either or both of them working. In the early days of farm tractors they didn't have hydraulics or PTO so even non-live operation was an improvement. Some tractors have a two-stage clutch where you depress the clutch pedal halfway to stop the tractor from moving but the PTO stays engaged and fully depressed the PTO stops.

Most tractors have a hydraulic system that is separate from the driveline so you have lift available whenever the tractor is running.

Search through the archives on the YT site for more info than you will ever need.

As for the newer equipment, try this link for some of the best deals on Kubota equipment:
http://www.carverequipment.com/kubota.htm
A few years back I bought a 89 model Case IH 1896 4x4 at auction for 14,500 with cab and air. It was NICE!!! It was also with a 5.9 cummins! I put a Great Bend Front end loader on it and it was one tough tractor!

I sold the ranch and sold the tractor but if I was to do it all over again I would not hesitate to buy one of those again...

James
Dang... I described the perfect tractor... It was a HOSS, it didn't cost too much, didn't give me no trouble, allowed for an 8' bucket that could quick detach and put other things on, had our beloved cummins, was the first year of the CASE IH marriage so it was red (not white), was 4X4 and would pull a 15' batwing like it was nothing. Cab air and heat with am/fm cassette to boot. I think it was considered 95 HP.

Funny thing though I went to the auction to buy a small JD or Kubota and they were going for just as much as this one. I lived in FORD and John Deere country (you know how folks are about regions VS popular brands) and Case IH was not popular in that area. Where I live now CASE IH is the BOMB along with John Deere. Go figure :

Re:Acreage tractor purchase help

Great info everyone, thanks. I often hear of rough cut mowers, now I know what they are talking about.
We have about 10" of black dirt on top of clay which is great stuff when dry but real sticky gumbo when wet. I "thought" a blade could get into some of this clay but it may not be possible. But a rototillar or ripper prior to trying to move it would be the answer?
I was going to have a local guy with his D5H push all the material we need, but I figure the $100 he is asking could be used to purchase something I would need anyways. I know what the D5H is capable of as he has done some work for us already and made it look easy. But it can't do everything I need, and it's been over a month waiting so I am convincing myself (and the boss) to buy a tractor with all the goodies and do it ourselves.

Re:Acreage tractor purchase help

Kubota makes a heckuva tractor, and alot less than the green paint. However, I have heard from owners that there drawback is there clutch. I believe the clutch is rated for 500 hours, go any further over that and you are VERY lucky. This is on the bigger line of Kubotas such as the 70+hp.

Re:Acreage tractor purchase help

One of our Kubota's lasted 25 years with almost NO service or maintence and we had every farm hand in the county tearing the hell out of it. No clutch issue's. It never let us down once in 25 years until the hydraulic pump gave out. Thats when I traded it for our 5210 JD. That was a mistake. That JD has had more problems in 2 years then the Kubota did in 25. I just got that New Kubota M4700 and I expect it to last 25 as well. I'll snap some pis of it this weekend.
