...shut it off with the tranny in neutral, then just as the truck rattles it's last revolution, slide it into gear, without using the clutch. Its a bit of a game for me, I'm goofy that way.

So what do you do?

 

I clutch it, come to a stop, play with the radio for a little bit (or the cb) to make sure the truck is cooled down, then shut it down and let out the clutch.

 

I just shut her down, then put it in 1st set the brake.

 

Is it bad to leave it in Neutral???

That's what I have been doing. I let the parking brake do it's job.......

My praking brake tends to pop off when its time for new rear brakes. so i would have to say yes it is bad to leave it in Neutral.

This is my first manual (truck at least) I have never left any of my cars in N, just leaves me the chance of starting it, popping my foot off the clutch and finding myself THROUGH the side of the house.

 

Due to the bone-crunching shake that occurs when a diesel engine stops, I got in the habit of putting it in neutral, foot away from the clutch, then shut it down.

I do this on every truck/piece of equipment.

If it has air-brakes, I leave it in neutral, just in case some idiot hits the starter without checking that it is in neutral.

I don't trust other types of brakes enough to not put the engine in gear.

Many years ago, when I hadn't yet gotten so wise, I jumped out of my brand-new 1978 Chevy 4x4, parked on a very slight incline, with the transmission in 4th gear and no park-brake set.

In my defense, many drivers, much older than myself at the time, had convinced me that there was no need to apply the parking brake when leaving the transmission in gear.

I walked inside a business place, and much to my horror, looked out the plate-glass windows to see my truck slowly advancing over the slope, in the general direction of another nearly new truck.

I ran like a deer, with everyone present watching the free show, and miraculously caught my truck, locked doors and all, inches before impact.

The transmission was, indeed, in gear; the engine was turning with the weight of the truck; it was a new truck; they don't have to be worn out to lose compression.

That learned me a lesson that has been with me for years; just because someone is your elder, does not mean that they are very bright.

Later on, I realised that I have been surrounded by lots of dumb old people that love to hand out advice, regardless of how useless it might be.

 

You could just back in the driveway, that way you won't be rocketed through the house

Really, where I am parked I would just rearrange my woodpile a bit (which my wife tried to do with about 200 miles on the truck, that is another story).

At the same time, there isn't anywhere for my truck to roll to while parked at home. It is out in the world that I should probably be putting it in gear while parked I suppose.

 

IF no hill, parking brake, idle till cool(go shut the gate while its cooling), then turn it off(no hill at all at home, so dont need to put it in gear)

On a hill, again, parking brake, idle till it cools down, then ill kill it, with the clutch in, in gear, and then get out...

It won't roll back if its in gear?

 

After the truck cools, I shut it down in nuetral. Then place it in first gear. My parking brake is broke so I try to park on the flatest ground possible.
