Actually it was class A properly boxed in. No threat there at all. There was no fire except in the stove. The smoke was from the new stove burning off the preservative.

I don't know about you, but I always set up a new wood stove in the driveway, put a short stack on it, and let er rip with a good hot pine fire.....before it's allowed in the house.

Better yet, ban it from the house. Put the boiler outside.

I don't care WHAT class it was/is, it is a threat. Any woodstove chimney is a threat as far as I'm concerned, nevermind one that is enclosed and inaccessible in a neighbors closet. I've seen triple wall insulated stainless chimney pipe glow bright red from a chimney fire, and on more than one occasion. I know it's not SUPPOSED to happen, but it does, especially when no one ever cleans the pipe and pays no attention to it what-so-ever. Which brings up another issue; if it's fully enclosed in a closet, and it came form the neighbors side, there has to be at least one elbow in it. How is THAT accessed for proper cleaning?

Bob, take a hike!

Afternooner y'all.

This condo is built in levels. Neighbor was on top. The chimney is straight.

I've never heard of a triple wall insulated chimney. A triple wall chimney is an old design for gas furnaces only. Some have used it for wood, and yes, it's a fire waiting for the right time.

A properly installed class A chimney, connected to a properly installed stove, is perfectly safe under all circumstances, including most neglect. With reasonable maintenance they are trouble free. A fire in them, controlled by before said properly installed stove, is no threat and will just clean the chimney, though that's not recommended procedure.

That said, I know of very few people that actually read the instructions and properly install either the chimney or the stove.

And that's because they're not designed for that. After one or two chimney fires, they start to lose integrity and become susceptible to failure of the inside pipe. Which leads to the failure of the outside pipe after the 3rd or 4th time. Somewhere I have pics from several fires I've investigated that were attributable to this.

As for the triple insulated pipe, I have a length of it in my shop. Designed and intended for wood burning appliances. I had it in my cabin in Maine and brought a piece with me to Michigan when i moved. 6" inside diameter, almost 12" outside diameter and all it does now is vent my oil furnace.

Nope, not at all! I just figure after 30 years in the fire business and almost 15 teaching investigation, I have a little clue as to what I'm talking about. I haven't accomplished a whole lot in my life, I admit that. But what I know, I know well.

History? History is like coffee... it's made everyday!

I'm not saying you don't know what you're talking about. I'm saying that the road got you stretched and tired and it isn't easy to get online and do some of the lengthier things like usual when one isn't on the road.

Mam, I'm standing up for you and you're biting my head off.

Mam? MAM?

I know you're standing up for me, but if I acknowledged that, what fun would THAT be? Besides, I guess you're right. I'm ready to go home and we still have 5 fun filled days left. And even after I get home, we'll be out straight until the end of November. But at least I'll be able to sleep in my own bed for most of the time.

That was suppose to be "Man". ha totally inadvertent, but that was pretty well placed eh?

I know I'm right. I know the sound of a grumpy gus tired of being on the road and ready to get home. Hang on by your fingertips and try not to kill anyone
