Question Wider or skinnier? (tires)

I have 33x12.50 R16.5 's on my truck right now, I want to go to 35" tall, what rim and width size is best for off-road/ driving, tire guy told me to dump my 16.5 (came with truck) rims, said they are starting to not make tires for them as much any more, and its true, can't get toyos or many others that fit. What tire width is the optimum for multipurpose daily driving and off-roading where you really need 4x4? (ie mud, snow, washed out trails, mild cross country, really mild rock crawling etc...) any advice???

I have 35 12.50's on right now... I had 305/70/17's... I liked the 305's a lot better for the way it handled and the way it rode. The 35's are too tall for my likings... the 305's were a little wider, too.

well, a skinnier tire is gonna yeild a bit better fuel mileage due to less rolling resistance, and if your in a lot of mud or snow, they can be good to get to the bottom of it to hit the hard ground or hard pack. A bigger tire will float a little better in the goo, but increased rolling resistance. I wouldnt go with a super wide tire for DD'ing and mild wheeling. Id just stick with a standard, medium width tire at 35"....

35/12.50-16.5 is a great all around tire. I own more sets in that size than anything. I have a set of BFG Mud Terrains in that size and love them. Not too wide, not too skinny. I also have some super swampers in a 14.5 and hate them. Too wide and horrible in snow.

There is nothing wrong with 16.5 wheels. 17''s are becoming the new norm with the new tread designs comming out. I personally don't run foreign made tires, they seem to be the ones supporting the 20"s and other more popular sizes.

In Cali deserts,we can use wide tires,a good bit of sand in most areas. Our trucks are so heavy a 12.50/13.50 will still be accepable in the lil snow we see.

currious?

Why is it that some tires look fatter on a truck than others for the same size? Mine look like drag radials while others appear to be skinnier? is it the Hegira of the tires? the truck size?

I guess 12.5 is the standard width for everyday stuff and a quality off-road experience. What rim width goes good with the 12.5 (or metric equivalent)?
