TXDTR#8 (North Texas DTR) April Meet
Hey RowJ, or anyone else for that matter.
When we were at the "ranch" the last time, you were telling me about a modified pick up tube to replace the factory piece in the tank. Since I now have the FASS and all my gauges taken care of, I want to do what I can to improve the fuel flow. Was it a vulcan straw? Also, how much of a pain was it to replace? I know the tank has to drop, but other than that?

Rowland has done his (err...Brian and Tyler) and I'm sure he and Dan will let you know the pro's and con's.
I knew I could count on someone to show me the light. My LP was replaced just prior to them going to the intake pump, so I lucked out on that. My pressure is at 13-13.5 psi at idle and 11.5-12 at wot.
I have to say, since I got the gauges, the drive is not nearly as boring. I like watching the gauges at different driving conditions.
As an added bonus, I have been taking it very easy on my truck since I bought it. So, I never really knew what it would do. I know now. The trasmission shifts like a monster and the truck just keeps pulling. The shift pattern keeps the RPM at approx 2100-2400 for the shifts The trans is built for towing with an upgraded TC. My EGT never gets above 950, trans never above 160 unless sitting in traffic and the FP is always spot on. I love this truck....

How's this for a possible plan.
IF I get another truck, I plan on doing the following to my 01. Let me know any suggestions ya'll may have. Keep in mind I won't be sled pullin', or drag racin', just want a dependable tow monster.
Have the head and possibly the block machined and upgraded to avoid what happened to Brian.
Upgrade to a larger single turbo.
Put on larger down tube and exhaust, NO stacks
Smarty only, no stacking of other products.
And larger injectors.

Even now, with a Smarty and 70/100 HP injectors and 4" exhaust, you'll be a looong way from what happened to Brian.
Going to 4" exhaust will lower you EGT's a few degrees, and it will also bring on boost faster.

I believe tyler and most definately brian said they are done with draw straws unless lots of payment in the form of many brown bottles was supplied.
You definately don't need studs or o-rings for doing what your doing. 40-45psi of boost and you'll be fine and I doubt you'll even need that much to keep a smarty and injectors cool. Unless you get monster injectors like me at which point even 42psi of boost will still allow for 1400* EGT's at WOT with just a smarty and injectors.
It would appear that I have upset some people by saying that I would never own another Dodge. It's quite interesting to stir up the pot on this site.

BUT you are fine at thoes pressures......
O yeah...i would just start saving for a HG and rings and then just keep adding until you pop it....that way you do it when is has to be done than doing it just because.....yeah you might get stranded...but dont get stupid more than 20 miles away from home and you should be fine! BUT this is said with the assumption that you are running water/meth and 50 PSI of boost! haha.....
BUT, like Brian said, you can make a killer truck that stays under 45 PSI all day long......so......
Great info guys. Gives me something to think about. Money permitting, I may go ahead and get the HG and rings done anyway to be safe. If everything goes somewhat as planned, I will be moving to a location that in itself is far away from civilization. I need my truck to be as dependable as possible with enough power to pull a heavy loaded 5er of GN in the mountains.

Wayne - Draw straw is not needed and will not really benefit you anything.
I did it for two reasons.... 1) had chance to be guinnie pig for 'Draw Straw' with FASS return line attached....and the main reason 2) Was very curious as to condition of tank and filter screens in fuel module at 100,000 miles.
I think Charlie, Brian & Tyler will agree that the stock Dodge system looked excellent. While a bit complicated, it seems to do the job with 300,000 - 500,000 miles in mind and does not need improving! Tank did not need cleaning either...possibly a result of burning BIO 20?
RJ
Would be a sweet combination, IMO, for towing and playful daily driving.

I agree that the draw straw is probably not needed... The stocker seemed to be just fine and I don't believe there was much restriction at all with that unit other than the mesh screens... I imagine if someone were to get a few dirty tanks of diesel than those mesh screens could get dirty and possibly reduce flow....
thinking out loud, but when that fuel canister fills up I believe that there would actually be some reverse flow through the screens to keep them clean?? maybe??
Dan I can not believe I threw that head in the back of my truck all by myself to get it up to school!
Either I am getting really weak or that thing is dang heavy and an awkward shape
Got it about halfway up on the first try and had to reposition and give it another go with a bit of a swinging motion!!
Yes Charlie another Kodak moment..
