Good point on the GN weight - the GN I built is pretty light for it's size & amenities and it's ~ 4500#

Dan, I think that farmer conned Robert into tearing up his weak, SW-abused, stock Tranny!

The tractor is a JD 6410. And the Gooseneck does have 7000lbs axles.


The farmer is my brother-in-law. He can pull it with his truck (Ferd 6.0 no) or I can pull it with mine. We are wrapping up the last of their move to Missouri and he has 3 different trailers that need to go. I can pull one of the lighter ones if I want.

I just thought it would be kinda cool to pull it and feel what it's like to pull that much weight. I will probably never have the need or opportunity to do it again.

That pic that Dan posted of the JD, looks very similar to Jim's.

AHHH....that is a baby compaired to the 4440! But a good one none the less. The 4440 were what they called Row Crop Tractors. This one, I beleve, is a Utility Tractor? Could be a newer style Row Crop....has the adjustable axles for it at least....... I could never get the numbers down, even after a year working for them! haha......all i know is they are some good machines whatever you get.

These newer smaller ones were built in Germany (Big'ns are built in Waterloo, IA) and you can tilt the cabs to work on the trans and such....Lots easier than pulling the cab off one!

That one with a loader full of fluids will still be over 10k (8166lb dry weight 2 wheel drive no loader).... Way pushing the limits of that trailer... I'd play it safe and let him pull it, id take something else better within the trailers cap... BTW most 7k axles I have seen lately including mine (changing as we speak) are equipped with E rated tires only good for around 2900 or so lbs, a far cry from the 3500 that is needed for a 7000lb axle!!

Cant say i have ever seen that......never knew them to use hydraulic motors for the wheel hubs on anything that old. Usually you see that with the compact utility tractors…and even then they have a drive shaft to a hydrostat motor for fnt and rear. NOW the MFWD was hydraulically engaged on most. I know those planetary hubs were a work of art when you got into them….would love to have a set of thoes ZF axles on the old Ford! Haha….BUT I would have to run TALL tire!

Heck….get old Brian Crouch over here…he can tell you anything you want to know about them things! He taught one of my JD classes they sent me to…..

Would love to talk to him! Have lots of questions regarding helping my step grandfather whatever....get this thing running.... (Head comes off a lot easier than the Massey Charlie!!! Man that thing makes me ) The service manual I am using is fairly vague and not nearly enough pictures! I think it is low on compression and I'm going to pull the head and the oil pan and pull a couple of pistons and see what the rings look like... After cranking it over for a bit and pulling one of the injectors where I suspected a compression problem I found it to be a bit oily, suggesting to me that some oil is finding its way past the rings... A guess luckly I can have the head off in about an hour and the oil pan will drop out without having to pull the motor!!!

Man...i have seen many an in-frame done.....and with relative ease.....

Going to send him a message now, have the oil pan about ready to drop but the front is hitting a crossmember of sorts for the front drive system... In order to remove the crossmember I would have to open all the hydro lines... Not excited about that, maybe I'm missing something..


Oh and I think the hydro drive is for the adjustable track... Be hard to do with a straight axle!!

Yall still ain't got that head off yet? I'm telling ya, hook it to a truck and floor it. Somethings gonna give.

In other news, my injection pump is on it's death bed. Tonight just trying to maintain 70mph up a slight incline the rpm's were bouncing 100 or so and the truck was surging. Bring it down to around 55mph in OD and the truck surges so bad you can't keep your foot steady on the pedal.

Don't really want to. Had to ask mom and dad. All I've got to my name is $200. I hate being broke. God I'll be glad when I graduate and stop living off of them. I hate asking them for money. One more year.
