Size: 8.1 KB (it's a super phat shaft)? Yes, it's that time again. I'm bored with my gauges and I want new ones. Not to mention I'm getting rid of my water temp and oil pressure gauge and just leaving the four on the pillar.

This is Texas, son - we don't ask mom for permission to bust out shootin' irons...

... which reminds me -

I hope everyone remembers to tell Mom, Wife, GF or SO Happy Mother's Day as needed!

Already did. Gave her an iPod so when she's mowing she can listen to music. She asked if it came with a 6 week training course.

And trust me, around here you want permission from mom before you start shooting stuff. Even when she gives you permission you can guarantee that your gonna get screamed at to stop because it's disturbing the horses. Don't ask how I know.

It looks like Memorial Day weekend I may be going to Missouri with the biggest load my little 5.9 cummins 3rd gen has ever pulled. John Deere (something)...forgot the numbers on it...but it is a big one with the enclosed cab.

We believe it weighs in at 13,400lbs with the front end loader bucket (400lbs) removed. Gooseneck prob weighs 3500lbs.....truck is 8000. So total GCVWR would be right at 25K. Think my engine will be "broke in" after that haul?

Should I lower my smarty down to something else besides 9, or just watch the EGT gauge on the hills? Have any of you towed anything this heavy before? Justin maybe? Brian? Any advice? I am trying to decide also if I should run slower and in 3rd gear....or go ahead and run in 4th like I normally do. Problem is for 4th....my rpms will settle down pretty low unless im hauling pretty fast. 2000 rpms puts me at over 75mph. But in 3rd, i'd be screaming at 2500 or so doing 60mph. I probably shouldn't run over 65 anyway for safety reasons....but 65 is kinda in that zone where 3rd is screaming and 4th is running my egts kinda high at 1500 rpms or so.

Yeah, turn the Smarty down so you can keep a transmission. I'd say run it like normal and if it is searching gears on every 1" climb then turn the O/D off. You might want to figure a way to work on the aerodynamics for the tractor (maybe use a tarp or something), drag will be your biggest enemy at higher speeds.

If I was you, I'd turn the smarty to stock or maybe 30hp. With that kinda load you want as little stress on the tranny as possible. It won't be as fast or nothing but you shouldn't have to worry about your tranny either.

When I pulled that Weekend Warrior unloaded (8000lbs) I left the Smarty on 9. It pulled awesome. Seemed to get better mileage than Smarty 3. I just felt like the truck felt more comfortable on 9.

Well this load would certainly be alot heavier. I don't have a problem reducing the Smarty down to 3 or even stock. Im not going to be winning any speed contests with the tractor load. My biggest concern is going to be EGTs on the bigger hills in OK and whether I should run in 3rd or 4th.

Saw that charlie. I'm gonna go ahead and schedule that weekend off tomorrow.

Robert, 8000lbs is a lot different than 13,000+ and believe me, while it might have pulled it awesome with the smarty on 9 your tranny was dying the whole time.

I'm going to Redline, but I'll be short a Crew Chief.
He's chaperoning a whirlwind tour of the Logic-Free Zone in D.C.

Robert, soon you'll have a reason to get that tranny you've always wanted...

Yup...that neutral mark. I keep forgetting that the position changes as fuel burns off! Thanks

Charlie, Redline is always fun.... a zoo, but a fun zoo! Got my vote.

Coincidently enough I just got done pulling a JD 4240 weighs in right around 10k dry but a little more with a full 60gal diesel tank, 10gal of oil, and 15+ gals of hydro oil... trailer was around 4500... Also had some other crap on the trailer, engine hoist from Charlie's, pressure washer, full bed chains etc... probably 23-25k total.... I turn my smarty to 3, would be off but I feel I need the timing with the injectors to get the twins rolling properly... I kept the speed at or under 65. HUGE wind load and fairly top heavy!! (tire comes to my chin and cab starts there going up!) I ran direct most of the way, ran right around 23-2400 RPMs... could do 6th but EGTs were higher and boost was higher to maintain same speed. Remember I'm also running 35s though and a higher gear 3.545s...

Take it slow if this is your first heavy equipment move expect to check and recheck chains a few times in the first 20miles as things bounce around and settle things loosen up, make sure brakes are in check and leading u.

PS what gooseneck are you using to haul 14k that only weighs 3400lbs??? Sure hope it has better than 7k axles under it!
