Lefty loosey is the correct direction... Thanks....

Got everything off and thought I had the gear set correctly, but......

Pulled the pump off and the keyway was pointing down, so the key dropped into the timing cover...

Next task is to either remove the timing cover or pull the vacuum pump.
Think I am going to do the latter and reseal the vacuum pump while the VP is out.. (easier to get to)
Also going to install a new camshaft position sensor since it is right there and easy to get to.....

Hopefully the key will be sitting under the vac pump gear and easy to get to.. we will see Sunday....

Any chance the vac pump tools are still at the cave..? And are any of the intake gaskets left???

Vac pump tools are either in there or Iker has them, I do not remember. As for the gasket, they are re-usable unless you destroyed it taking it off.

One gasket was ruined.. I can get one from Cummins when I pick up the CPS.

Can you or Scott check on the tools... Where is Iker....?

EDIT: Just saw iker42 is in Pa, too far to drive for some plastic.
I may just have to order the kit with the tools.

There is a guy that sells reseal kits for the vacuum pump and he makes a pair of 'tools' to help install the seals.
They are really no more than a few pieces of pvc pipe, but he has done the leg work on making them and he markets them along with a DVD with instructions on how to do the repair...
He has a website www.fixinrams.com and sells his stuff on eBay...
Once you have the 'tools' all you need to order is the kit with the new seals and gaskets.....

john with the keyway falling out you are going to have to make sure that it made its way all the way to the oil pan. if it gets between two of the gears it will do the same thing that the kill dowel pin has done to other trucks.

I am going to pull the vac pump and reseal it and see if I can find the key while it is out....
Hopefully it only fell that far...

If not, I am going to pull the front cover and make sure it is not in the cam or vac pump gear......

I finally saw a pic of the Cummins with the front cover off. That pump gear is huge. I thought it was much smaller and that was my fear... Now that I see it is so large. I understand why there is no threat of it moving.
