I found this forum because I was having problems with the 5th gear failure like so many others have had on their trucks. I have a 97 3500 4X4 extended cab that we use on the farm. Looks like I'll be coming back here quite often with all the help and resources that are avilable here. One question, do I have to take the transfer case off in order to get the rearhousing off of the case to get at the 5th gear and nut? So many of the post talk about removing the rear housing and how simple it is. after taking off the drive shaft and taking off the bolts that hold the rear housing in place I can only move it about a half inch back. From what I can see it looks like the transfer case has to come off too. Is that the case? Thanks,
