Won't Start when warm, No Codes

Go figure, I would have the truck that don't like to restart when its warm! Guess I need to start prior to my first dealer bill. I was having problems with loss of power, and had a wast gate code. Dealer said turbo had an oil leak and needed to be replaced, and did a valve adjustment while it was there too. All was to be ok.Huh? I drove 40 miles and engine light came on took it to Auto Zone checked codes and came back with MAP sensor, so I replaced it. All seem to be fine for 1 week. Now my vehicle won't restart after it has been running. I have checked fuel filter, put on a new lift pump, checked for leaks, cleaned the air filter. It will just turn over and over, fuel at the injector, but no idea if its enough pressure or not. Seems as it normally does when I get air in the injectors during a fuel filter change, though I can't find any leaks. Oh did I mention that there is no service engine light? I just paid for one 2700.00 dealer training, I say training because they try and make there gassers work on these Diesels and it just is not the same. Any suggestions, besides stay away from the theiving dealers!

Evil:
No codes, and will run just fine when its cold? I pulled 3 1900Lb cows, 2000lb trailer through a mud mess , in 4 x4 mode, no loss of power and no engine light. Turned it off, the restart, nothing? meaning just turns over and over. Again it seems though I have air in my injectors.

From what I have read, that is a somewhat common way for the VP to die. Next time it does not start, try pouring some cool water over the VP and see if it starts. If it does, well, you know the rest. Apparently there is a part of the electronics that gets warm and breaks contact. After cool down, the contact is made again. Since you are out of warranty, try calling some diesel perfomance shops and ask them for some assistance. You will also find that the VP is cheaper someplace other than the dealer. I do believe Dr Evil is correct in his diagnosis.

Tom is correct....you dont necessarily have to have codes for a dead VP-44. This is a classic symptom...seen it numerous times before (including no codes)....warm up the cheque book. We'll see what the others say....

Good Luck with it.

MNTom, I'll get right on that cold water on the VP44, and Evil, I guess I did not want to hear that VP$$, the check book is empty, have to wait and get some of these calves to market, so I can get a newen. I will keep you up to date on what happens.

Of course not - no one ever wants to replace one of those... Maybe someone else has another idea?? I guess if it dies, youll have an idea what the problem is. Good Luck.

Ok, ready for the VP44 Payday is next Friday, I want to know if I can use the VP44 for the manual transmission in stead of getting the exact one I have. I was told if I used the VP44 for the manual I would get a hp increase. Also I read that they have made these better is there a serial number that I should be looking to get one after? Oh truck is still running, just I don't shut if off till I am done with it, I would imagine soon it will stop competely.

I know better now than to go to the dealer and get it, but where should one go? Anyone have success with a company?

Lots of options. Cumminsstuff, Piers to name a few.

You could also try your local Cummins dealer. Re-mans are much better than originals of our era. Many "improvements".

Not sure on the auto/stick question. Always thought they were the same pump but don't know where they get the extra 20 or so ponies with the stick.

Just curious, was this the stock issue? is the housing black or silver.

Sorry for your loss man

I dont know about the auto/stick question either...never heard that before. Are you sure youre not talking about the H.O. version that appeared in 2001??

Tazman

Yes that was the stock issued unit, based on what the previous owner has told me.

From what I understand you cannot interchange a H.O. (manual trans) Vp44 and an auto VP44. The Vp in the auto is better anyway, so you wouldnt want to. Maybe try a hot rod vp44 from some of the vendors mentioned above by tazman or I have heard good things about this place:

http://www.industrialinjection.com/

I dont believe they have the hot rod pump listed on the website but if you call and talk to them, they will get you all set up.

Good luck
