welding downpipe

I pulled the old post turbo egt probe in my '02 and am preparing to mount a new one in the manifold. I need to fill in the hole where the old probe was. Is the heavy piece right behind the turbo steel or cast iron? I only have steel wire and can't weld in to cast. Suggestions?

Just run a pipe plug into the existing hole you don't want to use

Why not just put a pipe plug into it? That way, if you need it in the future, you still have it.

Don't know the answer for sure on cast/steel.

It's cast iron. Like the first 2 guys said, just put a pipe plug in it, no need to break out the welding rod.

I didnt put a pipe plug on because the guy that did it used a band clamp type install and the hole is unthreaded, I dont think I have any taps either.
