Water pump leak

Doing a head scratch on this one.
My son has a 98 Dakota w/3.9. Replaced the water pump a couple of months ago and found out the pump wasn't bad, just leaking at the bottom of the pump housing/block mating surface. It would appear to be doing the same thing again. It leaks only at an idle or just after shutting the engine off.
The surfaces were cleaned and a thin coating of rtv placed on both surfaces. I did notice that the gasket material was very thin as compared to other water pump gaskets.
It may be nothing more than a bad/poorly designed gasket. Has anyone experienced this problem before? If so, what did you do to correct it?

Bruce
