Water

I hae 68,000 miles on my truck and this morning headed out and after 5 miles the truck started hesitating. It got so bad I pulled off and called the dealer. The dealer said there was a lot of water in the lines and my lift pump had to be replaced and if the water got to the injectors then it would be a real problem. He's also replacing the fuel filter. The light for the water resevoir didn't come on so I'm baffled and upset. I get my fuel from the same place and have no way of checking if it's good fuel or not...Has anyone had this situation.

Thanks

Re:Water

Not that the dealer would mislead you, but some of them have very little expertise in diagnosing/servicing diesels. Other causes of hesitation could be the TPS, bad fuel lines sucking air, preheater screen clogged up or sucking air, or the lift pump. I capture the drained fuel and examine it every time I touch a fuel filter just to see if there is any sign of water. So far I have yet to find any evidence of water after 100K miles on my truck and several filter changes on other CTDs. If there was indeed that much water the WIF light should have told you a long time before it became a problem. Unless you have left the fuel tank cap off for extended periods or somehow got water poured down the filler tube I would be surprised if you have a water problem. Ask the deaker to verify the lift pump pressure before changing it out. Also make sure they check all of the rubber fuel lines for problems and ask for the old parts if they do change them (checking behind an honest shop shouldn't cause them to get their panties in a wad). Worst case is you have the injector pump going south but these usually give you more warning.

Regardless, good luck and let us know what it turns out being.

Re:Water

The dealer said I had gotten bad fuel and drained the fuel tank, removed it and cleaned it, they replaced the fuel filter and LP (under warranty)...Took two days total and the bill came to 365.00 including fuel filter...Seems to be working OK.
Did I get ripped on the bad fuel thing? The WIF light didn't come on, yet when they gave a an example of the fuel from the tank it showed water....

Maybe, maybe not. I don't know the dealership in question that did your work. If they showed you the fuel sample, how hard would it be to stop by the water fountain before showing you the sample. Or you really did have water in your tank. Either way I would have the WIF sensor checked.

Re:Water

Go back to the place where you got the fuel and ask them if anybody has recently complained about water in their fuel. If they sell to a lot of commercial users they should know if there is a problem because commercial users will hammer them if their equipment goes down because of contaminated fuel. Ask them also how often they change the water separator/filter in the diesel pump - if possible get them to let you see the filter on the pump you dispensed from. If the counterperson gives you a blank stare ask for the name and number of the service company that takes care of their pumps for them and give them a call. If they don't have a service provider (or do it themselves) then and start buying elsewhere.

Glad you got it straighened out but $365 would be better spent on BOMBing than repairing something that should have never happened.
