vacuum pump seal

I Was just wondering if there were any special tools needed to remove and replace the seal between the power steering and vacuum pump. Or any advice or tips would be great! Thanks

Take the whole assembly off and tear it down on the bench. You'll find that the seal just slides off the shaft. Very simple once you get it off the truck.

Did you ask the dealer what a new one costs? It's something like $2080 with the core charge included! Don't listen to the ***********. You should be able to find the o-rings at any industrial supply facility. You may want to take them in and have the supplier measure them to be sure you get the correct ones. You'll also need a gasket. I think I had less than $15 in parts and about 5 hours of my time in it.

Tip from a tech.....TSB 09-009-04 will give you the part number for the vacuum pump service kit. It's listed in the tsb's for 01's but I've used the kit on trucks as old as 97. Funny thing is that on Chrysler Service contract the vac pump number will come up as a covered item, but the repair kit won't so apparantly they screw themselves on this repair too. And for those who are interested you can get the reman pump at NAPA for around $400.00 if I remember correctly.

I got the vacuum pump seal kit from Dodge this week it was $39 Canadian. I'm going through the process right now. It's a parking lot job for me and has been a bit of a bear. I have it all apart now just have to clean and reassemble. Lots of junk in the way, wire looms and all kinds of fun stuff. I also need a new oild supply line but haven't been able to find one.

If anyone has any tips, fire away!

assuming you removed the pwr str pump and just moved it out of the way.....glue the "huge thermostat gasket" to the vac pump. It will install pretty easy back into the gear case. when you go to install the power steer pump sometimes it helps to have someone turn the engine over from the top while you hold pressure on the pump until the drive lug on the front of the power steer pump drops into place in the vac pump. Turn the engine over with a breaker bar on the alternator pulley nut. It will spin the engine over one way only, but direction isn't a concern here. Greasy dirty job. My arms are still "tattoed" from that **** diesel oil from doing one yesterday.

Yikes tell me about it. what a PITA.

It's back together now, I didn't see any tears in the seal or anything, I replaced the oring as well. I didn't have any silicone to stick the gasket on with (this was done in a parking lot!) so keeping the gasket in place while linging up the pump and the p.s pump support bracket was a pain.

I haven't started it yet. I'll do the APPS reset first. Then hope for the best.

See if it still leaks or not.

It's alive!!!

Fired it up just now, took about 30 seconds before I had vacuum and p.s back, then no problem so far.

had to bump the starter a few times since I had the VP wire harness off as well as a Banjo bolt/fuel line to gain clearance to work on the oil feed line.

I need to get anothe oil feed line I think though.....

Just have to reconnect some of the wire loom clips and stuff and the vent hose clip top make sure it doesn't hit the fan.
I'm very happy that it seems to be working without any drip so far.
I hope that cured my problem. I'm also going to get some hose clamps and clamp some vac hoses that had no clamps. Hoping that is going to cut down on my blow by. Sweet.
