Vacuum pump oil seal

Hi all! I have a slight problem. My 98 12 valve vacuum pump oil seal has sprung a terrible leak. I removed the pump and purchased a new seal but i have not figured out how to replace it. i went to the dealership and got the manual for my truck and it shows a p/s pump adapter that bolts onto the vacuum pump, but mine doesn't have this. All I have is the vacuum pump and p/s pump, and the only way to unbolt the vacuum pump is to take it apart into 2 pieces. it appears that there is a metal sleeve pressed into the back of the vacum pump containing the oil seal and the p/s pump shaft coupler. If anyone has any ideas or has run into this problem before then by all means please help!!! ??? well thats about it if i run into any other problems i will post them. thanks all

Re:Vacuum pump oil seal

I was reading up on this the other day. As I recall, there is an "O" ring between the two. I believe there are 2 nuts (I could be mistaken) that you remove to separate them.

Re:Vacuum pump oil seal

Just a reminder to any of you out there that have not had an oil leak at the vacuum pump yet, (eventually you will). Replace (or have replaced) BOTH the seal and o-ring. I had to take mine back to Cummins twice before they replaced the o-ring and finally cured the leak.

Was the o-ring at the sleeve? If at the sleeve do you recall what size it was?

Thanks, Frank.

Unfortunately, I do not have all the details. I had Cummins do the job so I'm not sure exactly where the o-ring is. They also did not invoice me since they did not charge me for it, so I don't even have a part number for you. Any Cummins dealer should be well aware of this problem and should be able to give you part numbers and maybe make you a copy of a parts breakdown if you ask them. The parts are not available to Dodge, so they probably will not have a parts diagram to give you.

It seems kind of funny that the pump is a DC part but they don't have parts for it, but Cummins does. I will try to get in touch with a Cummins dealer and see if they can help me .

Thanks for your help, Frank.

John Strenkowski at jvssyn@rcn.com sells the seal and oil ring for good price. They're hard to find elsewhere.

It ia a 38mm od x 28mm id x 7mm wide double lip viton seal

When the vacuum pump starts to leak, where does it usually leak from? The junction between vacuum and power steering or up against the timing case? Any one with info?

Paul
