bd short shift install

I am in the middle of putting the thing back together and seem to have ran into a small problem.

once I replaced the factory shifter with the BD short shift and getting ready to put it back together...

the silver metal piece that fastens the shifter by the four screws to the the housing (with the two triangle pieces of metal,

well, do the triangles go up or down? I got a phone call and lost track of what I was doing.

if i place them down, there does not seem to be any side to side play in it

if I place them up, it has a lot of excess in/out movement (like you can lift up on the gear shift)

help...

thank you.
