Two Nasty Problems
Two Nasty Problems
Hi there.

I have a 94' CTD Ram with rougly 110,000mi on it.

As of the last 20,000 a strange intermittent problem has developed, and at 2,000, yet another (I'll get to that in a bit.)

Ok the first problem goes as such. It usually has to be blazing hot outside (90F+). If I am towing, or simply driving on the highway at 75-80MPH, occasionally the engine will die. It will be driving smoothly, then suddenly run incredibly rough. Keeping your foot on the gas will keep the motor alive, although taking it off will have the engine lose RPM and die within seconds. While dying it is more or less pulsing, you hear a vroooom... vrooom... vroooom, croak. When its about to do this it has warning signs:

1. Starting the engine takes an unusual amount of time, yet it runs fine once going.

2. Off throttle on a downhill, the engine (and RPM) pulsate until at idle.

My initial thoughts are fuel delivery, but we recently had the dealership clean all the algae from the tank and check out the fuel system, and apparently all is good. ???

Stranger yet, when the engine dies, waiting a minute or so and restarting will have the engine running fine again. This occurs on the freeway alot and there isnt always an offramp handy in case it occurs, and the dealership cant find anything wrong. Whats going on?

Secondly:
We lost the original transmission @ 95,000mi. It was then professionally rebuilt by a friend of the family known for race transmissions. When we got it back it shifted incredibly firm (and rough) but towing was quite a bit easier. Now, about 10,000mi+ later its having an issue. Again (on hot days usually) it springs up. The best way to describe it I guess would be to say the torque converter is slipping. I'll get on the gas and the RPM will jump up and hold at say, 2000 RPM. Then the truck will slowly lurch forward and accelerate. All the while the motor is revving the same. This absolutely kills towing performance and gas mileage. We took it back to the mechanic who couldn't find anything wrong. He installed some sort of a pump device to cycle the transmission fluid (in case it was settling in the converter) which helps some, but not much. I also wonder if this is just something wrong with the trucks ECU?

Sorry for the annoyingly long post, but this has been driving me nuts for months now. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

-A.
It's my pot and I'll stir it if I want to. If you're not careful, I'll stir your's as well!

Re:Two Nasty Problems
Problem #1
Just guessing here, but I would take another look at the fuel filter. Take it out and give it a good visual. Also would hook up a FP gauge and see what the pressures are under all load conditions. There is also a possibility that the injector pump is going south but I don't think this is the case here. Let us know if the fuel pressures are OK or not.
Problem #2
Not sure. It could be the TC but I suspect the tranni more. Just maybe it is not starting in low but in some other gear. Would not be surprised if you end up tearing the tranni apart again. (sorry, not what you wanted to hear)
Whatever you find to resolve either problem, please post the results.
Re:Two Nasty Problems
Problem #1 sounds like a Fuel Shut-Off Solenoid. When they start getting dirty, or wearing out, they give symptoms like this.

Problem #2 Sounds like the trans is starting out in 3rd Gear. With the 47RE tranny, this happens when a few sensors get dirty,, not sure why or (if) the 47RH trannies can do this.

You'll have to get some info from an Experianced 12V'er to find out how to diagnose, temporarily solve, and fix your Shut-Down solenoid. (I'm a 24V'er myself, upcoming 12V'er)

Merrick Cummings Jr
