Turbo problem or just paranoid?
Turbo problem or just paranoid?
Last week I was underneath my truck inspecting everything before winter and as I looked up at the back of my turbocharger, I noticed some oil seepage. It is on the backside of the intake compressor housing. I ran my finger around the back of the housing and picked up some oil residue. After closer inspection, there doesn't appear to be enough oil seeping to drip, just enough to leave residue on the back of the compressor housing. I took it to a local dealership on Friday and they told me not to worry about it, that it is normal. I have looked at several other trucks this weekend and all of them appear to be dry. Is this something that I should be concerned about and try to get DC to replace it under warranty, or is this normal. Even though the local dealership states it is normal, I want to get a second opinion. Any info. anyone can provide me with will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
It should be dry, find another dealer if you have a warranty. If not, check your oil feed line to be sure it is not leaking, and if it is good then pull the turbo and have it rebuilt at a real turbo shop - not the dealer. The price of a rebuild is not that much.
As a side, leaks of oil are most often caused by improper engine shutdown and oil coking in the bearings and seals of the turbo.

Sounds like it is sweating slightly, but it should be dry like rcw said. You must still have warranty left, take it to another dealer. If out of warranty, it may be time to look at an upgrade possibly as an option, if you plan on bombing it some.
