truck won't start (lp dead?)

today i was mounting my fuel pressure gauge and when i went to get the air out of the line no fuel came. i unhooked the line to the gauge from the fuel filter. long story short, the lift pump isn't pumping fuel. i can hear the lp running when i turn the key, but it isn't bringing any fuel that i can tell. anyway to test the lp or is there air in the line between it and the fuel tank(the tank is full). thanks in advance

check for codes by cycling the key from off to fun, opps ,run pos. 3 times stoping in run pos. dash flashes codes , then come back here and go to top of page to tech facts to find definition of code. good luck.

Hate to say it, but your truck would start if it were just the lift pump. You don't need the LP for the truck to run, you just need it to keep the Injector Pump healthy. So guess what's next on your replacement list.

He got air into the system when he removed the line, so no start.
Hopefully his VP44 survived.

I agree. The truck ran up until he broke the "seal" on the system and allowed air to break the prime.

That is two dead trucks tonight that could have been avoided by a fuel pressure guage.

PLEASE GET FUEL PRESSURE GUAGES PEOPLE!

A running pump sound MEANS NOTHING!

I know in my case with a dead LP, it still started after I cracked the lines. I just had to keep cranking the starter until it got fuel through. And put the go pedal to the floor to let the air through the system.

Same Deal

I had the exact same thing happen back when my lp crapped I was replacing my fp gauge and trying to bleen air out ,and I freaked out that my vp was gone to the pump in the sky,The lp would run like crazy but no fuel and engine would not start,as luck would have it my F.A.S.S came the same day and well after the swap out she lit up fine no vp problem at all...Knock knock so far So did it just die? or was it toast before the open fuel system?
We may never know, hope yours will end up ok also.

I did have a fuel pressure guage and 2 nights before the truck died it was reading 8psi at idle. My wife had to drive it the next day so I'm not sure what it was at then. Oh well, it's going to sit in Georgia for the next couple of weeks until I can get back and fix it. Until then I'll be driving my wifes PT Cruiser with the "Ranger Wife" sticker on the back

There was your clue. 14 - 15 PSI at idle is normal. My guess is your IP is fine. Just replace the LP and you should get her back on the road again. You might need to crank it for awhile to purge the air out, or crack an injector line like some do.

I had the same problem with my 99. The lp would run but no fuel,I ended up put air to the tank by sealing off fuel fill with grease rag and aplying a small amount of air with air hose.I had to crack the line at the vp until I got fuel , retightened and then started truck with air still aplied. Just be carefull ,not to much pressure,if the truck runs then your vp should still be ok,just dont drive it. It still might take a little cranking to start up if vp has air in it,good luck!
